Ignition Lock Drive Gear Replace

1982---83 ESCORT, LYNX, EXP & LN7

Removal
1. Remove lock cylinder assembly.
2. Insert screwdriver into lock gear recess and turn until gear retainer is broken loose. Discard retainer.
3. Remove lock bearing, gear and actuator assembly.
Installation
1. Install actuator assembly into lock housing and push assembly all the way toward steering wheel.
2. Install lock gear and position it so that last tooth of gear meshes with last tooth of actuator.
3. Insert housing bearing, rotate 90 degrees and insert new retainer. Seat retainer with {5-8} inch socket and hammer and rotate gear and actuator assembly to align bores of bearing and lock gear.
4. Install lock cylinder assembly.

1984---87 ESCORT, LYNX, EXP, TEMPO & TOPAZ

Removal
1. Remove lock cylinder assembly.
2. Remove plastic retainer, washer and lock drive gear from lock cylinder housing. Note location of lock drive gear in relation to rack teeth.
Installation
1. Install lock drive gear in the same position as removed from. The lock drive gear is installed correctly when the last tooth of the drive gear is meshed with the last tooth on the rack.
2. Install washer and plastic retainer.
3. Align drive gear flats with washer flats by pulling downward on column lock actuator.
4. Install lock cylinder assembly.
