Spoiler: Description and Operation
Active Rear Spoiler
Active rear spoiler
The active rear spoiler is included as standard equipment. The active rear spoiler is integrated in the tailgate and is extended automatically. The active rear spoiler increases driving stability at high speeds.
The Junction Box Electronics (JBE) activate the active rear spoiler.
Brief component description
The following components are described for the active rear spoiler:
- Roof operating unit
- Drive, rear spoiler
- Junction Box Electronics (JBE)
Roof operating unit
The active rear spoiler is operated manually via the roof operating unit. The roof operating unit is connected to the Junction Box Electronics via an eight-pin plug connection.
The manual mode can be used, for example, to clean the rear spoiler with the ignition switched on or the engine running. The LED above the button lights up. Press the button towards the rear to extend the rear spoiler.
Drive, rear spoiler
Automatically extending rear spoilers are used where for design reasons it is not desirable for a rear spoiler to be permanently visible. The additional contact pressure on the rear axle is only required at high speeds. For this reason, the active rear spoiler is only extended from the tail of the vehicle from speeds of 80 km/h upwards.
The active rear spoiler is driven by an electric motor. A hall effect sensor in the electric motor counts the motor revolutions.
The end position of the rear spoiler is detected by a hall effect sensor in the mechanical system.
2 plug connections connect the unit with the wiring harness.
Junction Box Electronics (JBE)
The Junction Box Electronics (JBE) activate the rear spoiler drive via a relay. The relay is soldered onto the power distribution box of the junction box. The junction box supplies the rear spoiler drive via terminal 30 and ground connection.
The end position of the rear spoiler and the rev. count of the electric motor are transmitted to the JBE.
The Junction Box Electronics are located on the right in the passenger footwell.
System functions
The following system functions are described for the active rear spoiler:
- Functional networking
- automatic mode (D)
- Malfunctions
Functional networking
The following system overview shows the functional networking:
Automatic mode
A retracted rear spoiler is in automatic mode at engine start. If necessary, a self-test of the rear spoiler is carried out during drive-off, which can lead to a noise being heard briefly.
- Automatic extension
When a speed of approx. 80 km/h is exceeded
- Automatic retraction
When the speed drops below approx. 60 km/h
The active rear spoiler cannot be retracted manually at speeds above 60 km/h when in automatic mode.
Malfunctions
Malfunctions are indicated by a Check Control message and an acoustic signal.
In the event of a malfunction while driving at speeds in excess of 50 km/h, the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) is switched on.
Notes for Service department
General notes
NOTICE: Using a car wash with a rear spoiler.
The rear spoiler must be retracted before driving into the car wash.
