SUBJECT:
SUNROOF RATTLE OR SQUEAK
PURPOSE
This bulletin presents field repair information to correct a squeak or rattle in the sun roof on 1990 Eclipses that may be caused by the security spring at the right side of the sunroof. Two separate procedures are given, one to correct the squeak and the other to correct the rattle.
(On 1991 models, the security feature is built into the latch. Therefore this procedure applies only to 1990 models.)
CORRECTIVE ACTION
A. Squeak when sunroof is open
When the sunroof is open, the security spring may rub against its bracket and cause a squeak. Corrective action is to cover the security spring and its bracket with shrink tubing as follows:
1. Remove sunroof glass assembly from the car and lay it upside down on a padded surface.
Figure 1.:
Figure 2.:
2. With a screwdriver, bend out the side of the security spring retainer. Figure 1. Then pry out the outboard leg of the security spring as shown in Figure 2.
Figure 3.:
3. Cut a length of 1/8" shrink tubing 1 1/2", long and slip it over the spring. Figure 3.
Then heat it so it shrinks and stays in place.
4. Reinsert the end of the security spring in its hole; then bend the retainer back to its original shape.
Figure 4.:
5. Cut a piece of 1/4" shrink tubing 1/2" long and slip it over the security spring hook on the car roof. See Figure 4. The tubing covers the entire hook. Heat it to shrink it in place.
NOTE: The tubing must fit very snug over the hook so that the hook functions as intended.
6. Clean the glass and reinstall the glass assembly.

B. Rattle when sunroof is closed
When the sunroof is closed, the security spring may rattle against the glass assembly. Corrective action is to install a foam-rubber bumper between the security spring and glass rim as follows:
1. With the glass assembly removed, cement a foam pad 1/4" thick and about 1" long and 1/2" wide to the sunroof rim where the security spring will touch when the roof is closed. See Figure 5. Use double-sided tape or trim adhesive to hold the foam pad in place.
2. Clean the glass and reinstall the assembly.
