REMOVAL
Refer to Figs. 46 through 49, when removing silent shaft, oil pump and front case.
1. Position a suitable screwdriver between oil pan and cylinder block and slide along groove to remove.

Fig. 48 Flange Bolt Removal:

2. Keeping silent shaft in position by inserting a screwdriver through plug hole in left side of cylinder block, Fig. 48. Remove oil pump driven gear flange bolt.

Fig. 49 Front Case Removal:

3. If front case is sticking to cylinder, insert a suitable screwdriver into slot and pry up, Fig. 49. Never attempt to pry at any other positions where flange is thinner. Also avoid applying impact to front of case for removal.
4. Using removal tool, No. MD998282-01 or equivalent, remove front and rear bearings from cylinder block.

INSPECTION

1. Ensure silent shaft oil holes are not clogged and journal is inspected for seizure, damage or contact with bearing. If so, replace bearing or front case assembly.
2. Measure silent shaft clearance. If clearance is excessive due to wear, replace silent shaft bearing, silent shaft or front case assembly. Clearance should be as follows:
a. Right: Front 0.0008-0.0024 inch, Rear 0.0020-0.0036 inch
b. Left: Front 0.0008-0.0021 inch, Rear 0.0020-0.0036 inch
3. Ensure oil pump side clearance of each gear is as follows:
a. Drive gear: 0.0031-0.0055 inch
b. Driven gear: 0.0024-0.0047 inch

INSTALLATION

1. Install silent shaft in cylinder block.

3. Using small end of oil seal guide tool, No. MD998375-01 or equivalent, on all except 1.8L/4-107 engines, or No. MD998304 or equivalent on 1.8L/4-107 engines, install crankshaft front oil seal, Figs. 51 and 52. If crankshaft front oil seal is already mounted to front case, use oil seal guide for protection of oil seal.
4. Install front case.

Fig. 22 Securing Silent Shaft:

5. Insert a screwdriver through plug hole in left side of cylinder block to keep shaft in position, Fig. 22, then tighten bolt to specification.
6. Install oil filter bracket assembly and gasket, then tighten front case bolts and oil filter bracket bolts to specification.
7. Install plug cap.
8. Install oil screen and gasket, then clean gasket surfaces of cylinder block and oil pan.
9. Install oil pan gasket, if equipped, using a small amount of suitable gasket sealant. If no gasket is used, apply a 0.16 inch (4mm) wide bead of suitable sealant to entire circumference of oil pan flange.
