Cylinder Head Bolt Torque and Sequence

Cylinder Head





Use special tool MB991654 to tighten the cylinder head bolts as follows:
Tighten the cylinder head bolts to 78 ± 2 Nm (58 ± 1 ft. lbs.) in the order shown.
Loosen the bolts fully in the reverse order of that shown.
Tighten the cylinder head bolts to 20 ± 2 Nm (15 ± 1 ft. lbs.) in the order shown.





Apply a paint mark to the heads of the cylinder head bolts and cylinder head, then tighten 90 degree angle as shown.

Camshaft bearing cap bolt 20 ± 1 Nm (14 ± 0.5 ft. lbs.)
Bearing cap bolt 20 ± 1 (15 ± 1 ft. lbs.)
Cylinder head bolt nominal length 99.4 mm (3.91 inch)
Cylinder head flatness of gasket surface
Standard value Less than 0.03 mm (0.0012 inch)
Limit 0.2 mm (0.008 inch)
Cylinder head grinding limit of gasket surface 0.2 mm (0.008 inch)*
Cylinder head overall height 119.9 - 120.1 mm (4.720 - 4.728 inch)
Cylinder head bolt shank length 99.4 mm (3.913 inch)

Exhaust Manifold
Hand tighten all the exhaust manifold mounting nuts.
Tighten the M8 nuts to 29 ± 3 Nm (21 ± 2 ft. lbs.) in the indicated sequence.
Tighten the M10 nuts to 49 ± 5 Nm (36 ± 3 ft. lbs.) in the indicated sequence.
Tighten the M8 nuts again to 29 ± 3 Nm (21 ± 2 ft. lbs.) in the indicated sequence.





Finally tighten the M10 nuts and the M8 nuts to the specified torque, both in the indicated sequence.
Tightening torque:
M8 33 ± 6 Nm (24 ± 4 ft. lbs.)
M10 55 ± 10 Nm (41 ± 6 ft. lbs.)

* Total resurfacing depth of both cylinder head and cylinder block
