Canister Purge Solenoid: Description and Operation
Canister Purge Control Solenoid:
PURPOSE
The Canister Purge Solenoid will either allow vacuum to pass to the Purge Control Valve or vent the vacuum based on signals from the Engine Control Module (ECM). The Canister Purge Solenoid also functions as the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Control Solenoid.
OPERATION
When the ECM sends a ground signal, the coil in the solenoid valve is energized and a plunger moves to cut the vacuum signal from the throttle body to the EGR valve and carbon canister purge valve. When the ECM sends and OFF signal, the vacuum signal from the throttle body passes through the solenoid valve to the EGR valve and carbon canister.
