Distributor Ignition (DI) System
Distributor Ignition (DI) System Inputs And Outputs:
PURPOSE
The ignition system provides input signals and output devises to allow the Engine Control Module (ECM) to maintain the best blend of engine performance and emissions under all operating conditions.
OPERATION
The ECM uses several sensors to calculate the amount of timing based on a map stored in its memory. It varies the timing during:
^ At starting
^ During warm up
^ At idle
^ Hot engine operation
^ At acceleration, the ignition timing is revised by the ECM according to the other data stored in the ECM.
The Ignition System is equipped with a Knock Sensor (KS) System. By design, the basic timing is pre-programed within the anti-knock zone, consequently this system does not operate under normal driving conditions. If the engine knocks, the Knock Sensor sends a signal to the ECM and it retards the ignition timing.
