Steering Column - Removal and Installation

REMOVAL
1. Remove inflator module as outlined in Air Bag. Refer to Air Bags and Seat Belts/Air Bags(SRS).
2. Disconnect battery ground cable.
3. Remove air bag module and steering wheel, Fig. 2.
4. Remove knee bolster and reinforcement bracket.
5. On models with column shift, remove shift lever cable.
6. On models with console shift, unlock ignition and remove park lock cable, then lock ignition.
7. On all models, disconnect steering column wiring harness connector from main body wiring harness.
8. Disconnect steering column shaft from intermediate shaft, position seal as needed.
9. Loosen but do not remove two nuts at lower steering column support.
10. Support column and remove two nuts at upper steering column support. Discard clips at upper steering column support.
11. Remove steering column from vehicle.

INSTALLATION
1. Loosely install nuts on lower support bracket studs, position steering column into vehicle and slide lower support onto nuts.
2. Support column and install two nuts on upper support bracket studs.
3. Position intermediate steering shaft through seal and onto column shaft. Torque pinch bolt to 35 lb ft and upper and lower support nuts to 20 lb ft
4. Move intermediate steering shaft seal into position.
5. Connect steering column wiring harness connector to main body wiring harness and torque to 71 lb in
6. On models with column shift, shift lever cable.
7. On models with console shift, unlock ignition and install park lock cable, then lock ignition.
8. On all models, install knee bolster and bracket or reinforcement.
9. Install steering wheel and air bag module.
10. Connect battery cable.
11. Check steering for proper operation.
