Transmission Replacement

Removal Procedure

Caution: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Service Precautions.





1. Disconnect the battery ground (negative) cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnect/Connect Procedure in Starting and Charging.
2. Remove the throttle body air inlet duct. Refer to Air Cleaner Intake Duct Replacement in Powertrain Management.
3. Install the engine support fixture. Refer to Engine Support Fixture.
4. Remove the engine mount struts. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Replacement (Left) and Engine Mount Strut Replacement (Right) in Engine.
5. Disconnect the wiring harness connectors from the transaxle. Refer to Harness Routing Views in Powertrain Management.
6. Disconnect the automatic transaxle range selector cable from the PNP switch. Refer to A/T Range Selector Cable Replacement (A/T PNP Switch).
7. Remove the automatic transaxle range selector cable bracket with cable from transaxle. Refer to A/T Range Selector Cable Bracket Replacement.
8. Remove the PNP switch. Refer to A/T Range Selector Cable Replacement (A/T PNP Switch).
9. Remove the fluid filler tube. Refer to Fluid Filler Tube Replacement.
10. Remove the upper transaxle bolts (3, 4 and 5) and stud (2).
11. Remove the wiring harness grounds.
12. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
13. Remove the front tires and wheels. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Wheels, Tires and Alignment.
14. Remove the engine splash shields. Refer to Splash Shield Replacement - Engine in Body and Frame.
15. Remove both tie rod ends from the steering knuckles. Refer to Steering Knuckle Replacement in Steering and Suspension.
16. Remove the power steering gear from the frame. Refer to Power Steering Gear Replacement in Steering and Suspension.
17. Use wire to secure the power steering gear to the vehicle.
18. Remove the power steering cooler line clamps from the frame.
19. Remove the engine mount lower nuts. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement in Engine.
20. Remove the lower ball joints from the steering knuckles. Refer to Steering Knuckle Replacement in Steering and Suspension.
21. Remove the torque converter cover. Refer to Torque Converter Cover Replacement.
22. Remove the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Starting and Charging.





23. Remove the torque converter bolts.
24. Drain the transaxle fluid.
25. Disconnect the transaxle oil cooler hoses from the transaxle. Refer to A/T Oil Cooler Hose Replacement.
26. Disconnect the drive axles from the transaxle. Refer to Wheel Drive Shafts Replacement (Left) and Wheel Drive Shafts Replacement (Right) in Drive Axle.
27. Secure the drive axles to the steering knuckle and struts.
28. Disconnect the wheel speed sensors wiring harness connectors. Refer to Wheel Speed Sensor Jumper Harness Replacement (Front) in Brakes and Traction Control.
29. Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor wiring harness connector. Refer to Vehicle Speed Sensor Replacement.
30. Use the transaxle table to support the transaxle and frame.
31. Remove the transaxle brace. Refer to A/T Brace Replacement.





32. Remove the lower transaxle bolt (6) and stud (1).
33. Remove the frame to body bolts.
34. Separate the engine from the transmission.
35. Lower the transaxle and frame from the vehicle.
36. Remove the transaxle from the frame to the bench.
37. Refer to Transmission Overhaul for the inspection procedure and for the overhaul procedure.
38. Use the J 35944-A or equivalent to flush the following components whenever the transaxle is removed for overhaul or whenever the torque converter pump or the case is replaced:
^ Flush the transaxle oil cooler(s).
^ Flush the hoses.
^ Flush the pipes.
^ Refer to A/T Oil Cooler Flushing.

Installation Procedure





1. Install the transaxle to the frame on the transaxle table.
2. Raise the transaxle and frame assembly to the vehicle.
3. Install the frame to body bolts.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

4. Install the lower transaxle bolt (6) and stud (1).
^ Tighten the lower transaxle to engine and engine to transaxle bolts to 75 Nm (55 ft. lbs.).
5. Install the transaxle brace. Refer to A/T Brace Replacement.
6. Remove the transaxle table.
7. Connect the vehicle speed sensor wiring harness connector. Refer to Vehicle Speed Sensor Replacement.
8. Connect the wheel speed sensors wiring harness connectors. Refer to Wheel Speed Sensor Jumper Harness Replacement (Front) in Brakes and Traction Control.
9. Connect the drive axles to the transaxle. Refer to Wheel Drive Shafts Replacement (Left) and Wheel Drive Shafts Replacement (Right) in Drive Axle.
10. Connect the transaxle oil cooler hoses to the transaxle. Refer to A/T Oil Cooler Hose Replacement.





11. Install the torque converter bolts.
^ Tighten the torque converter bolts to 63 Nm (46 ft. lbs.).
12. Install the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Starting and Charging.
13. Install the torque converter cover. Refer to Torque Converter Cover Replacement.
14. Install the lower ball joints to the steering knuckles. Refer to Steering Knuckle Replacement in Steering and Suspension.
15. Install the engine mount lower nuts. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement in Engine.
16. Install the power steering cooler line clamps to the frame.
17. Install the power steering gear to the frame. Refer to Power Steering Gear Replacement in Steering and Suspension.
18. Install both the tie rod ends to the steering knuckles. Refer to Steering Knuckle Replacement in Steering and Suspension.
19. Install the engine splash shields. Refer to Splash Shield Replacement - Engine in Body and Frame.
20. Install the front tires and wheels. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Wheels, Tires and Alignment.
21. Install the fluid filler tube. Refer to Fluid Filler Tube Replacement.
22. Remove the vehicle support.
23. Lower the vehicle.





24. Install the upper transaxle bolts (3, 4 and 5) and stud (2). and install the wiring harness grounds.
^ Tighten the upper transaxle bolts (3, 4 and 5) and stud (2) to 75 Nm (55 ft. lbs.).
25. Install the PNP switch. Refer to A/T Range Selector Cable Replacement (A/T PNP Switch).
26. Install the automatic transaxle range selector cable bracket with cable to transaxle. Refer to A/T Range Selector Cable Bracket Replacement.
27. Connect the automatic transaxle range selector cable to the PNP switch. Refer to A/T Range Selector Cable Replacement (A/T PNP Switch).
28. Install the wiring harness connectors to the transaxle. Refer to Harness Routing Views in Powertrain Management.
29. Install the engine mount struts. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Replacement (Right) and Engine Mount Strut Replacement (Left) in Engine.
30. Remove the engine support fixture. Refer to Engine Support Fixture.
31. Install the throttle body air inlet duct. Refer to Air Cleaner Intake Duct Replacement in Powertrain Management.
32. Connect the battery ground (negative) cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnect/Connect Procedure in Starting and Charging.
33. Adjust the toe-in, if required. Refer to Front Toe Adjustment in Steering and Suspension.

Notice: Do NOT overfill the transaxle. The overfilling of the transaxle causes foaming, loss of fluid, shift complaints, and possible damage to the transaxle.

34. Adjust the fluid level. Refer to Transmission Fluid Checking Procedure.
35. Use the a/ 35944-A or equivalent to Flush the following components whenever the transaxle is removed for overhaul or whenever the torque converter pump or the case is replaced:
^ Flush the transaxle oil cooler(s).
^ Flush the hoses.
^ Flush the pipes.
^ Refer to A/T Oil Cooler Flushing.
36. Inspect for proper completion of the repairs.
37. Inspect for fluid leaks.
