A/C - Noise/Inadequate Air Flow

File In Section: 01 - HVAC

Bulletin No.: 00-01-39-002

Date: September, 2000

TECHNICAL

Subject:
Noise in HVAC System/Insufficient Air Flow From HVAC System/HVAC System Pulling/Lifting Papers/Debris From Glovebox Bin (Install Barrier Material)

Models:
2001 Oldsmobile Aurora
Built Prior to VIN Breakpoint 14123892

Condition

Some customers may comment on the following conditions when the HVAC system is in the RECIRC mode:

^ Noise in the HVAC system near the IP storage compartment (glovebox).

^ Insufficient air flow from the HVAC system or the HVAC does not operate properly.

^ Papers/debris are being pulled/lifted/drawn from the IP storage compartment (glovebox) bin.

Cause

The HVAC module, when in the RECIRC mode, may have sufficient strength to pull/lift/draw papers/debris out of the top of the IP storage compartment (glovebox) bin when the glovebox door is closed.

The ingestion of the papers/debris may cause noise, insufficient air flow and/or the HVAC module to be inoperative.

Correction

Install a 20.3 cm x 25.4 cm (8 in x 10 in) sheet of barrier material, Adhesive Flocking Tape, P/N 12378189 (P/N 10953434 in Canada), between the IP storage compartment (glovebox) bin and the air duct in order to close off the glovebox bin opening.

Repair Procedure

1. Fold the 20.3 cm x 25.4 cm (8 in x 10 in) sheet of Adhesive Flocking Tape, P/N 12378189 (P/N 10953434 in Canada), lengthwise into three sections with the paper backing (1) to the outside.

2. Along the fold lines (2), cut through the paper backing ONLY.

3. Remove the lower RH closeout/insulator panel. Refer to the Instrument Panel, Gauges and Console subsection of the Service Manual.

4. Remove the four fasteners that secure the IP storage compartment (glovebox) to the instrument panel. Do not remove the glovebox.

5. Install the Adhesive Flocking Tape sheet, P/N 12378189 (P/N 10953434 in Canada) using the following steps:

5.1. Remove the backing paper from one of the outboard sections of the Adhesive Flocking Tape sheet and apply it to the backside of the air duct (3).

5.2. Remove the backing paper from the other outboard section of the Adhesive Flocking Tape sheet and apply it to the top of the rear section of the glovebox (4).

Important:
Do not remove the backing paper from the center section (5) of the Adhesive Flocking tape sheet.

6. Install the four fasteners that secure the P storage compartment (glovebox) to the instrument panel.

Tighten

Tighten the fasteners to 2 Nm (18 lb in).

7. Install the lower RH closeout/insulator panel. Refer to the Instrument Panel, Gauges and Console sub-section of the Service Manual.
