DISTRIBUTOR ASSEMBLE
1. Lubricate and test operation of governor weights. Inspect weight springs for distortion and bearing surfaces and pins for damage.
2. Lubricate upper thrust washer and install onto shaft. Install shaft into housing.
3. On 6 cylinder units, install lower thrust washer and distributor gear and roll pin. If a replacement distributor gear is to be installed, proceed as follows:
Scribe Line On Distributor:
a. Install thrust washer and replacement gear on rotor shaft. Position pin hole in replacement gear approximately 90 degrees from hole in distributor shaft, with scribed line made during disassembly between gear teeth.
NOTE: On replacement distributor gears, the role pin hole is located higher than the original gear roll pin hole, so that distributor shaft will not be weakened when the shaft is rotated 90 degrees and drilled to accommodate the replacement gear.
Aligning Gear Teeth With Center Line Of Rotor:
b. Before drilling through shaft and gear, place a .007 in. feeler gauge between gear and thrust washer and observe that centerline between two gear teeth is in line with centerline of rotor electrode. Drill a 0.124 to 0.129 in. hole and install roll pin.
NOTE: Support gear hub when installing role pin so gear teeth will not be damaged.
4. On eight cylinder units, install distributor shaft retainer and pin.
5. On all units, install lower late, upper plate and pick-up coil assembly.
6. Attach vacuum advance unit to pick-up plate, then install vacuum advance unit attaching screws and washers (if equipped).
7. Position reluctor keeper in into place on reluctor sleeve, then slide reluctor down reluctor sleeve and press firmly into position. Install keeper pin.
8. Lubricate felt pad located in top of reluctor sleeve with one drop of light engine oil, then install rotor.
PICK-UP REPLACE & AIR GAP ADJUST
1. Remove pick-up coil and upper plate by depressing retainer clip and moving it away from mounting stud. Pick-up coil cannot be removed from upper plate.
2. Lightly lubricate upper plate pivot pin and lower plate support pins with distributor lubricant. Install upper plate pivot pin through smallest hole in lower plate and install retainer clip.
NOTE: The upper plate must ride on the support pins on the lower plate.
3. Install lower and upper plates and pickup coil as an assembly and install distributor into vehicle.
Aligning Gear Teeth With Center Line Of Rotor:
NOTE: On dual pick up distributors, the start pick up may be identified by a two prong male connector and the run pick up may be identified by a male-female plug, Fig. 6.
Air Gap Adjustment:
Air Gap Adjustment:
4. To set air gap on all single pick up distributors and on start pick up of dual pick up distributors, align one reluctor tooth with pick up pole and install a 0.006 inch non-magnetic feeler gauge between reluctor tooth and pick up pole, Figs. 6 and 7. Rotate pick up coil until contact is made between reluctor tooth, feeler gauge and pick up pole. Tighten pick up coil hold down screw and remove feeler gauge. The feeler gauge should be removed without force. If it cannot, readjust gap.
5. To set air gap on run pick up of dual pick up distributors, first adjust start pick up as described in step 5, then adjust run pick up as describe in step 5. Use a 0.012 inch non-magnetic feeler gauge to adjust run pick up air gap.
6. Perform a second gap check using a 0.008 inch non-magnetic feeler gauge on all single pick up distributors and on start pick up of dual pick up distributor or a 0.014 inch non-magnetic feeler gauge on run pick up of dual pick up distributors. Do not force feeler gauge between reluctor tooth and pick up pole as it is possible to do so. The feeler gauge should not be able to fit between the reluctor tooth and pick up pole if air gap is correctly set. Apply vacuum to vacuum control unit (if equipped). Pick up should not contact reluctor tooth. Readjust air gap if contact occurs.
NOTE: If pick up contacts reluctor teeth on one side of shaft only, the distributor shaft is most likely bent and shaft replacement required.
