Choke Thermostat/Heater: Testing and Inspection

1. Disconnect electric heating element at the control switch.
2. Connect an ohmmeter lead to the crimped junction of this wire at the choke end.

NOTE: Do not connect to the steel heater casing.

3. Hold the other ohmmeter lead against the choke housing or engine manifold.
4. Electrical resistance of 4-6 ohms for 1973 and 4-12 ohms for 1974-82 units is normal. Meter readings indicating an open or short, replace choke assembly.

If the system is found out of calibration, a new heater control switch or choke unit must be installed.

NOTE: The electric assist choke system does not change any carburetor service procedures and cannot be adjusted. However, the choke linkage and shaft must move freely hot or cold.
