SYMPTOM/CONDITION

Ignition timing retards with mileage accumulation, resulting in poor engine performance.

DIAGNOSIS

Check ignition timing for being retarded. If the vehicle history file indicates repeated timing adjustments have been made, then the cause could be due to cross shaft drive gear bushing wear. Use the following procedure to correct the condition.

PARTS REQUIRED

1 - Repair Package PN 4293858

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Set crankshaft on TDC firing on #1 cylinder.

2. Make crayon mark on distributor housing and cast adapter base.

3. Remove distributor clamp bolt and clamp.

4. Remove distributor.

5. Remove distributor adapter screws (two).

6. Remove distributor adapter base - discard gasket.

7. Mark position of drive slot and remove distributor drive adapter (note that slot is not on center).

8. Carefully remove circlip and discard. Use magnet or a rag around the gear to catch the circlip.

9. Remove drive gear.
10. Raise vehicle, remove oil pump.

NOTE: THE OIL PUMP DRIVESHAFT WILL NOT COME OUT ALL THE WAY BECAUSE OF DRIVESHAFT, BUT WILL SLIDE OUT FAR ENOUGH.

11. Lower vehicle, insert Tool C-3052 into bushing, and thread down until a tight fit is obtained.

12. Position SP1193 over C-3052 followed by 3" sleeve and nut.

A. Carefully tighten puller nut until bushing is removed.

CAUTION: WHILE REMOVING THE BUSHING IT WILL CONTACT THE CAMSHAFT GEAR. REMOVE BUSHING SLOWLY TO AVOID DAMAGING THE CAMSHAFT GEAR.

13. Install new bushing onto guide of driver, Tool C-4757 - one and two. Put grease on bushing inner diameter to keep bushing from falling off driver. Position bushing in bore with small flat up. Drive bushing in full depth. Using soft wire, check oil hole alignment.

NOTE: FLATS ON BUSHING SHOULD BE PARALLEL TO OIL RAIL.

14. Raise vehicle on hoist. Clean oil pump gasket surfaces and position gaskets.

A. Slide oil pump driveshaft into position. Install oil pump and torque bolts to 12 foot pounds.

NOTE: CLEAN AND SEAL THE BOLT THREADS WITH MOPAR/LOCTITE THREAD SEALANT, PN 4318034, TO PREVENT OIL LEAKS.

15. Lower vehicle.

16. Install new Drive Gear, PN 4273864, with internal splines outward.

17. Carefully install new circlip. It may be necessary to pull outward on driveshaft while holding gear down to expose groove for circlip.

18. Install distributor drive adapter. With engine firing on #1 and crank at TDC, the larger segment of the drive adapter is upward and the drive slot is positioned to aim at the corner of the cylinder block top face and timing cover (approximately 45~).

19. Install distributor base casting with new gasket. Torque bolts to 15 foot pounds.

20. Install distributor, clamp, and screw.
21. Check oil. Align mark on distributor and base that was made during disassembly. Warm engine and set timing to 12~ at 850 rpm without vacuum.
