Service Procedure

Carburetor Modification and Adjustment

1. Remove carburetor air cleaner assembly.

2. Drain coolant from radiator and save.

3. Remove carburetor, using the procedure in the Service Manual.

With Carburetor on Bench:

4. Remove and replace primary main air jet with #60 jet supplied. (See Figure 1.)




Service Procedure

Note: A special tool must be fabricated for the following step. The tool is made by grinding a notch in the center of a standard screw driver blade to the dimensions shown in detail below. The time allowance for fabrication is 0.3 hours. Each dealer should need only one such tool and submit one claim.

With Carburetor on Bench:

5. Using special tool, turn the accelerator pump nut counterclockwise by 3 full turns. After turning nut to its new position, apply sufficient Loctite or similar threaded fastener adhesive to lock the nut and stud. (See Figure 2.)

IMPORTANT: On a few vehicles the accelerator pump nut may already have been readjusted at the factory. This can be determined by inspection. If the nut is flush with the end of the threaded stud, the adjustment has been made and this step must be omitted.

6. Install supplied orifice (0.5 mm) into end of hose attached to secondary vacuum control diaphragm. Reattach hose. (See Figure 3.)
7. Clean gasket surfaces on the manifold and carburetor.

8. Reinstall carburetor using gasket supplied.

9. Reinstall carburetor air cleaner assembly.

Service Procedure

Water Temperature Sensor Replacement

1. Disconnect battery ground cable and remove wiring connector from water temperature sensor. (See Figure 4.)

2. Remove water temperature sensor.
3. Apply an even coat of sealant to the threads of the supplied water temperature sensor. (Use MOPAR Spray Gasket 160 Sealer Part No. 4318035, or equivalent.)

4. Install the new sensor and torque to approximately 25 foot-pounds.

Note: To prevent damage to the sensor, do not use impact tool to install.

5. Replace engine coolant.

6. Check and adjust the ignition timing, if necessary, at 5-7~ BTDC.

7. Check and adjust the idle speed, if necessary. See emission label located on the underside of the hood for proper adjustment.
