SYMPTOM/CONDITION

Speedometer does not operate (vehicles built prior to January, 1985).


DIAGNOSIS

The cause of an inoperative speedometer is probably due to a broken cable. Cable breakage can result from improper routing during assembly. To avoid repeat failures, replacement cable must be routed as follows:


REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Disconnect battery.

2. Remove instrument cluster.

3. Remove speedometer cable and see if it is broken at the upper end. If it is, then breakage is probably due to improper routing.

4. Reroute the new cable and housing from the present location to the outboard side of the steering column as shown in Figure 1. Add wire tie to inner flange of steering column support bracket.

5. Reinstall instrument cluster.

6. Connect battery.

7. Check speedometer for smooth operation.
