SYMPTOM/CONDITION

Transaxle is noisy and may be difficult to shift. Shifting difficulties will be experienced when attempting to shift into 5th gear on 5-speed transaxles, or when shifting from "P" to "E" or from "E" to "P" on 4 x 2 transaxles, on subject model vehicles built prior to April 1, 1986.

PARTS REQUIRED

NOTE: THESE REPAIR PARTS MUST BE USED TOGETHER WHEN UPGRADING TRANSAXLES BUILT PRIOR TO APRIL 1, 1986. THESE REPAIR PARTS CAN BE USED INDIVIDUALLY ON TRANSAXLES AFTER APRIL 1, 1986 OR AFTER UPGRADE OF EARLIER UNITS.

Use the attached Chart 1 to identify transaxle application.

Use the attached Chart 2 to identify parts required for each transaxle application.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

This procedure involves installation of new transaxle assembly components.

1. Remove and disassemble transaxle, using the appropriate service manual procedure.

2. Clean all components thoroughly. Inspect all parts for damage or wear.

3. Replace defective components (see chart).

4. When installing the snap ring on the input shaft, use the thickest snap ring that will go into the snap ring groove (see Chart 2).

5. When installing the new lock nut on the input shaft it should be torqued to 110 foot pounds (150 N-m) and then staked, as indicated in Figure 1.

6. Assemble remainder of transaxle and install in vehicle, using appropriate service manual procedure.

7. Refill transaxle and verify proper operation.
