SYMPTOM/CONDITION

Transmission noisy and/or difficult to shift. Shifting difficulties will be noticed when attempting to shift into 5th gear on 5-speed transmission, or when shifting from "P" to "E" or "E" to "P" on 4 x 2 transmission.

DIAGNOSIS

Road test vehicle to confirm the noise and/or shifting difficulties. The problem could be caused by the staked input shaft nut loosening (Figure 1).
PARTS REQUIRED

1 Nut PN MD706503

REPAIR PROCEDURE

It will be necessary to replace the input shaft staked nut.

1. Remove the transaxle per the appropriate service manual.

2. Disassemble transaxle, thoroughly clean, and inspect all parts for damage.

3. Replace any damaged or worn parts.

4. Remove the lock nut (Figure 1) from the input shaft and replace it with a new one, along with any parts that require replacement. The new nut is black in color in the hex area.

5. Tighten the new nut to 138-156 N-m (102-115 ft.lbs.) and stake as shown in Figure 2.
6. Reassemble transmission and reinstall in vehicle.

7. Refill transaxle with 75W-85W gear oil.

NOTE: IN COLDER CLIMATES 10W-30W ENGINE OIL MAY BE USED FOR TRANSAXLE FILL TO IMPROVE COLD WEATHER SHIFTING.

8. Road test vehicle and check for proper transmission operation.
