SYMPTOM/CONDITION

The top clear coat may lift or peel away from the base color coat, leaving a dull finish. In the early stages, this condition may appear as small white spots in the paint, and is normally only on horizontal surfaces (Figures 1 and 2)..
Models Affected

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Clean the surface to be repaired thoroughly with water, followed by 900 Pre-Kleano or equivalent, to remove road tar, waxes, and contaminants.

2. Sand with #400 grit wet/dry or finer sandpaper (to minimize sand scratches) and completely remove the peeling clear coat down to the base color coat (or to primer if the base color coat has also deteriorated).
CAUTION: IT SHOULD NOT BE NECESSARY TO SAND PAST THE PRIMER SURFACE. DOING SO WILL REMOVE THE ORIGINAL COATING APPLIED FOR RUST PROTECTION. IN THE EVENT ANY AREAS SANDED GO DOWN TO BARE METAL, BE CERTAIN TO FOLLOW THE MANUFACTURER'S PROCEDURES IN APPLYING METAL PREP AND A CORROSION RESISTANT PRIMER.

3. Blow off the sanding dust and wipe with a clean tack rag.

4. Spray one coat of R-M non-sanding sealer, or equivalent, to the area to be repaired to minimize sand scratches.

5. Use Miracryl 2 base coat, or equivalent, reduced with the recommended thinner following the application instructions for flash time and film build.

6. Apply clear coat (4 parts MC1000 Clear/1 part 894 Hardener, or equivalent) to the base coat following the recommended spray application instructions.

CAUTION: AS IN ALL REFINISH APPLICATIONS, WEAR THE APPROPRIATE RESPIRATOR WHILE SANDING AND SPRAYING.
