SYMPTOM/CONDITION
Buzzing and/or squawking noise in shifter. The noise can occur in any gear, most objectionable between 2000 and 3000 rpm.
DIAGNOSIS
1. With transaxle in neutral, rev engine from idle to 3500 rpm, moving the shifter in small (1/4") increments from side to side, listening for a harsh roar.
2. With engine off, shift completely through the pattern, listening for a squawk particularly at the fore and aft of travel.
3. If either noise is heard, perform the following repair procedure.
PARTS REQUIRED
Mopar Multi-Purpose Grease PN 4318063
Grease Gun With Needle Fitting
REPAIR PROCEDURE
1. Pry shift tube end fitting off clevis ball stud.
2. Apply a heavy coat of Mopar Multi-Purpose Grease to the ball stud and the cavity of the end fitting.
3. Reconnect end fitting to ball stud using pliers.
4. Insure that the connector bushings are fully lubricated with Mopar Multi-Purpose Grease.
5. De-trim interior until the upper plate of the shift mechanism is accessible.
6. With the shifter in 3rd gear, drill a 3/16" hole in the hollow plastic ball at its rearmost visible point.
7. Slowly inject a small amount, approximately 20 grams, of Mopar Multi-Purpose Grease through the drilled hole.
8. Cycle shifter rapidly up and down about 10 times.
9. Reinstall trim in vehicle.
10. Road test to insure proper shift lever operation and that buzz is eliminated.
