Diesel Data: Automotive Repair

Service Procedure

A. Clean Carburetor

1. Remove air cleaner assembly.

2. Drain about one gallon of engine coolant from the radiator and save for later use.

3. Remove the throttle return spring.

4. Remove the carburetor following Service Manual procedures.

5. Clean the outside of the carburetor and the choke linkage with MOPAR Brake and Carburetor Parts Cleaner PN 4318037 or equivalent.

6. Clean the Primary Air Bleed Jet, Secondary Air Bleed Jet, and Choke Shaft (Figure 1).

B. Install Carburetor Choke Adjustment Shim

1. Insert the fast idle release tool between the fast idle cam lever and the wax element housing (Figure 2).

NOTE: Insert the tool so that there is no interference with the throttle lever movement.

Figure 3:

2. Turn tool counterclockwise (about 45 degrees) until the tool is wedged in the position as shown in Figure 3. This provides the needed clearance between the choke adjusting screw and the plunger.

3. Using the installation stick attached to the choke shim, install the shim on the choke adjusting screw (Figure 4).

4. Rotate the fast idle release tool clockwise and remove.
5. Detach the installation stick from the shim by twisting the stick until it breaks free from the shim.

6. Insure that the choke adjusting shim is securely installed between the plunger and the adjusting screw.

C. Replace the Enrichment Solenoid Jet

1. Locate the Enrichment Solenoid Valve on the carburetor directly above the accelerator pump housing.
2. Remove the Enrichment Solenoid Valve and replace the enrichment solenoid jet with a new one contained in the emissions service package.

3. Reinstall the Enrichment Solenoid Valve and tighten to 2.2 ft.lbs. (2.9 N-m).

NOTE: Do not over tighten the Enrichment Solenoid Valve since this will distort the valve and cause an over rich condition.
D. Reinstall Carburetor

1. Reinstall the carburetor using the Service Manual procedure. Use a new carburetor gasket from the service kit.

2. Reinstall throttle return spring.

3. Refill radiator coolant.

4. Reinstall air cleaner assembly.
