Visual Inspection
In order that the ignition and fuel systems function properly, all electrical, vacuum or air hose connection must be complete and tight.
Terminals in electrical connections must lock together. Look for connectors that are not fully plugged into each other or terminals that are not fully plugged into the insulator.
All hoses must be fully and firmly fitted at their connections. Look for hoses that are not fully plugged on or are pinched and cut.
The following must be checked before proceeding with the diagnostic procedure.
1. IGNITION SYSTEM COMPONENTS
A. Connectors at computer.
B. Pickup coil connectors at distributor.
C. Spark plug wires.
D. Coil wire (cap and coil connections).
E. Connectors at coil.
F. Connectors at starter relay.
G. Connector at detonation sensor.
2. FUEL CONTROL SYSTEM
A. Connector at charge temperature sensor located in the rear of the intake manifold.
B. Connector at oil pressure switch.
C. Connector and choke control.
D. Connectors at carburetor harness.
E. Carburetor ground switch.
F. Connectors at air switching and EGR solenoids.
G. Engine harness to main harness connector.
H. Battery cables.
I. Battery ground on engine.
J. Engine to firewall ground strap.
K. Oxygen sensor connector.
3. CARBURETOR (2-BBL)
A. Power brake booster hose.
B. Choke vacuum kick diaghragm vacuum line connector.
C. PCV valve hose.
D. Bowl vent hose.
E. Computer vacuum line connector.
F. Canister purge hose.
G. EGR signal vacuum line connector.
4. CARBURETOR (4-BBL)
A. Power brake booster hose.
B. Computer vacuum line connector.
C. EGR signal vacuum line connector.
D. Choke vacuum kick diaphragm vacuum line connector.
E. Computer vacuum line connector.
F. PCV valve hose.
G. Bowl vent hose.
H. Canister purge hose.
I. Canister purge signal vacuum line connector.
5. EGR SYSTEM (2-BBL)
A. EGR valve vacuum line connector.
B. EGR delay valve vacuum line connectors (Federal only).
C. EGR vacuum bleed off valve vacuum line connectors.
D. EGR control solenoid vacuum line connectors.
6. EGR SYSTEM (4-BBL)
A. EGR valve vacuum line connector.
B. EGR control solenoid vacuum line connectors.
7. HEATED AIR INTAKE SYSTEM (2-BBL)
A. Heated air door vacuum diaphragm hose.
B. Heated air vacuum delay valve hoses.
C. Heated air temperature sensor hoses.
D. Heated air vacuum hose at vacuum tee in choke vacuum kick diaphragm vacuum hose.
8. HEATED AIR INTAKE SYSTEM (4-BBL)
A. Heated air door vacuum diaphragm hose.
B. Heated air temperature sensor hoses.
C. Heated air temperature sensor hose at intake manifold vacuum supply nipple.
9. FUEL VAPOR CONTAINMENT DOOR (4-BBL)
A. Vapor door vacuum diaphragm hose.
B. Vapor door vacuum delay valve hoses.
C. Vapor door vacuum hose at vacuum tee in heated air vacuum supply hose.
10. EVAPORATIVE CONTROL SYSTEM (2-BBL)
A. Bowl vent hose at canister.
B. Purge hose at canister.
C. Purge signal hose at canister.
D. Fuel tank vapor hose at canister.
E. CVSCC valve vacuum line connector.
F. Purge signal hose at vacuum tee in vacuum line at intake manifold vacuum supply nipple.
11. EVAPORATIVE CONTROL SYSTEM (4-BBL)
A. Bowl vent hose at canister.
B. Air pump hose at canister.
C. Purge hose at canister.
D. Fuel tank vapor hose at canister.
E. Bowl vent hoses and vacuum line connector.
F. CVSCC valve vacuum line connector.
12. AIR SWITCHING SYSTEM
A. Air switching/relief valve control solenoid vacuum line connectors.
B. Upstream and downstream hoses at air switching/relief valve.
C. Air switching/relief valve vacuum line connector.
D. Air switching/relief valve air pressure line connector (4-BBL only).
13. MISCELLANEOUS
A. Correct PCV valve.
B. PCV system breather hose.
C. Power brake booster hose.
D. Intake manifold vacuum supply nipple.
E. Speed control servo.
F. Computer vacuum hose.
G. Heater water valve vacuum line connector.
