SYMPTOM/CONDITION

A new camshaft sprocket and timing belt upper cover have been released for the 2.0L engine. The new sprocket has two timing marks on it; one at the original location B=95~15', and a new one at A=65~15', as shown in Figure 1. The new timing belt upper cover has an inspection window with access cover (Figure 2). These changes will make it easier to adjust timing belt tension on front wheel drive cars.

The new sprockets have been used since engine #EY5588 (October, 1986), and the new covers since engine #EY9097 (October, 1986).
REPAIR PROCEDURES

NOTE: THIS PROCEDURE IS FOR ON-CAR ADJUSTMENT OF TIMING BELT ONLY. WHEN NEW BELT IS INSTALLED, OR WHEN TIMING COVER HAS BEEN REMOVED, USE THE EXISTING (ORIGINAL) TIMING MARK.

FIGURE 2:

1. Remove the access cover from the timing belt front upper cover (Figure 2).

FIGURE 3:

2. Turn the crankshaft clockwise until piston #1 is at top dead center on compression stroke (Figure 3).

CAUTION: AFTER TIMING MARKS ARE ALIGNED, DO NOT TURN THE CRANKSHAFT COUNTERCLOCKWISE. TURNING THE CRANKSHAFT COUNTERCLOCKWISE CAN CAUSE IMPROPER BELT TENSION.

FIGURE 4:

3. Turn the crankshaft clockwise by two teeth of the crankshaft sprocket (Figure 4).

NOTE: ABOVE OPERATION POSITIONS CAMSHAFT JUST PAST TOP CENTER ON #1, GATHERING SLACK IN THE TIMING BELT ON THE TENSIONER SIDE.
CAUTION: DO NOT TURN THE CRANKSHAFT COUNTERCLOCKWISE. TURNING THE CRANKSHAFT CAUSES TENSION ON THE TENSIONER SIDE OF THE TIMING BELT, RESULTING IN IMPROPER BELT ADJUSTMENT.
4. Using a screwdriver in the slots provided, remove the two access covers from the timing belt lower cover.

5. Insert a 14 mm wrench through the access holes, and loosen the timing belt tensioner bolt and nut.

CAUTION: LOOSEN THE BOLT AND NUT ONLY ENOUGH TO ALLOW THE TENSIONER TO ADJUST. ANY FURTHER LOOSENING MIGHT RESULT IN THEIR FALLING OFF INSIDE THE TIMING BELT COVER.

6. Tighten the tensioner mounting bolt (lower access hole) and then the tensioner nut (upper access hole) to 40 foot pounds.

CAUTION: BE SURE TO TIGHTEN THE BOLT FIRST. IF THE NUT IS TIGHTENED FIRST THE TENSIONER WILL ROTATE WITH IT AND BELT TENSION MAY BECOME LOOSE.

7. Install access covers.
