Tilt Column

On models with airbag restraint system, battery ground cable must be disconnected and isolated before performing this procedure. Failure to do so may result in accidental deployment and personal injury.
1. Remove turn signal switch, refer to Vehicle Lighting/Turn Signals/Turn Signal Switch/Service and Repair.
2. Remove key lamp assembly.
3. Place lock cylinder in the Lock position and remove key. With a suitable tool, depress spring loaded lock retainer and pull lock cylinder from housing bore.
4. Remove buzzer/chime switch using a stiff wire. Hook bent on end of wire should be inserted in exposed loop of wedge spring. Ensure spring does not fall into column. If wedge spring falls into column, complete disassembly is required to retrieve spring.
5. Remove housing cover attaching screws, then housing cover.
6. If necessary wash/wipe switch and pivot pin can be removed. Also tilt lever opening shield and dimmer switch actuator rod may be remove from cap.
7. Place column in full Up position. Remove tilt spring retainer. Insert screwdriver in opening, press in approximately 3/16 inch and turn approximately 1/8 turn counterclockwise until ears align with grooves in housing and remove spring and guide.
8. Push upper steering shaft in sufficiently to remove steering shaft inner race seat and inner race.
9. With ignition switch in Accessory position, remove ignition switch mounting screws, then ignition switch.
10. Reverse procedure to install.
