3 Checking SMEC Spark Plugs & Engine Timing
1. Turn ignition switch Off, remove spark plugs and look at tips.
2. If spark plugs are wet, clean plugs, reinstall, then proceed to Test 16. If spark plugs are not wet, reinstall spark plugs.
3. Connect a timing light to the engine, then crank engine and observe timing marks.
4. If timing marks are between 0 and 16°, check compression and valve timing, then proceed to Test 16.
5. If timing is not between 0 and 16°, remove distributor cap, crank engine and observe distributor rotor.
6. If distributor rotor does not turn, repair drive for intermediate shaft, then proceed to Test 16.
7. If distributor rotor turns, install distributor cap, crank engine and set timing to 10°BTC.
8. If engine does not start, check compression and valve timing, then proceed to Test 16.
9. If engine starts, set ignition timing to specification and check camshaft and intermediate shaft timing, then proceed to Test 16.
