NOTE: Adjustment of the outer bearing retainer is required when axle shaft or wheel bearing are replaced, but not required when axle shaft are removed and reinstalled without replacement of components.
1. Install axle shaft into axle housing without installing packings and shims.
2. Temporarily tighten nuts until bearing outer race comes in close contact with axle housing.
3. Measure clearance between axle housing and backing plate.
4. Using chart determine number and thickness of packing and shims to be used.
5. Install axle shaft assembly.
