SUBJECT:
Service Manual Supplement - Liftgate Garnish Moulding Removal/Installation
MODELS:
1992 (B8) Colt Vista/Summit Wagon
DISCUSSION:
When removing and installing the exterior liftgate garnish moulding, there is an interference between the moulding and the lower edge of the liftgate glass that makes removal and installation very difficult. This information was not published in the 1992 Vista/Summit Wagon Service Manual, No. 81-270-2113 and is supplemental to the information found on page 23A-109.
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
This procedure has been developed to ease the removal and installation of the liftgate garnish moulding shown.
GARNISH MOULDING ASSEMBLY
REMOVAL/INSTALLATION - REAR LIFTGATE GARNISH
1. Remove the interior trim panel by carefully pulling it away from the liftgate. Leave the retaining clips at the top outer positions on the trim panel while leaving the four inner clips on the liftgate. Peel off the waterproof film.
2. Remove the garnish moulding retaining nuts from the studs from inside the liftgate. Note the two outer nuts under the chrome tape.
3. Apply masking tape to the lower edge garnish moulding adjacent to the liftgate glass to protect it during removal (Fig. 1).
4. Remove the rear window wiper arm.
5. Use a nylon trim stick to remove the exterior garnish moulding. Be careful to avoid steps a and b.
a. Do not break the clips when removing them, pinch them with pliers to release them from inside the liftgate (Fig. 2A).
b. If a stud gets caught when removing the garnish moulding, use a mallet handle to push the stud out from inside the liftgate (Fig. 2B).
Using the trim stick, begin removing the garnish moulding by starting at the lower edge, then loosen the left and right edges (See Fig. 3A). Continue the removal by carefully prying down on the top edge of the garnish moulding to loosen it to complete the removal (See Fig. 3B).
6. If the studs in the garnish moulding were bent during removal, straighten them before proceeding with the installation.
7. Check the plastic trim clips to ensure that the foam rubber seals are all pushed down on the dips. Replace any broken trim clips (See Fig. 4).
8. Position the garnish moulding on the liftgate and align the trim clips with the holes in the liftgate.
9. Using the trim stick, carefully work the top edge of the garnish moulding into position and then push the trim clips and retaining studs into the holes in the liftgate (See Fig. 5).
10. Install the retaining nuts on the studs inside the liftgate and install the interior trim panel.
11. Install the rear window wiper arm.
