Antenna: Testing and Inspection
1. Check the following electrical connections:- Antenna lead connection at the radio.
Windshield Antenna:
- Windshield antenna lead connector in the antenna amplifier The antenna amplifier is located under the instrument panel top cover and mounted on passenger side of the defogger duct.
Antenna Amplifier Module:
- The antenna amplifier connectors.
2. Using an ohmmeter check for resistance of no more than 1 ohm at the antenna amplifier:
- Amplifier antenna lead connector to the radio antenna lead connector
- Amplifier bracket to a ground on the frame
3. Using a voltmeter, turn ignition switch to ON position, check for battery voltage at the X60 circuit at the antenna amplifier connector.
4. Move the vehicle outside and at least 10 meters (35 feet) from the nearest building. Turn ignition switch to the accessory position, turn radio ON, with DX function ON and a very weak AM station ON. Very weak is defined as a station the radio will not seek to. You should hear background noise, but still be able to understand the program material.
a. Disconnect windshield antenna lead connector in the front dash panel. If there is a great drop in reception quality, then the antenna and amplifier are OK. If not OK, verify by connecting a 1.5 meters (5 ft.) piece of wire to the terminal and holding it vertical. Check for drop in radio reception quality If OK replace windshield. If not OK, go to Step b.
b. Connect windshield antenna lead connector to antenna amplifier. Disconnect bullet connector at amplifier. There should be a great drop in reception quality. If not OK, replace antenna amplifier.
