Service Precautions

WARNING: ALTHOUGH FACTORY INSTALLED BRAKE LININGS USED ON THIS VEHICLE ARE MADE FROM ASBESTOS FREE MATERIALS, SOME AFTER MARKET BRAKE LINING MAY CONTAIN ASBESTOS. THIS SHOULD BE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT WHEN SERVICING A VEHICLE'S BRAKE SYSTEM, WHEN AFTERMARKET BRAKE LININGS MAY HAVE BEEN INSTALLED ON THE VEHICLE. ALWAYS WEAR A RESPIRATOR WHEN CLEANING BRAKE COMPONENTS AS ASBESTOS CAN CAUSE SERIOUS BODILY HARM SUCH AS ASBESTOSIS AND OR CANCER. NEVER CLEAN BRAKE COMPONENTS BY USING COMPRESSED AIR, USE ONLY A VACUUM CLEANER SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED FOR THE REMOVAL OF BRAKE DUST. IF A VACUUM CLEANER IS NOT AVAILABLE, CLEAN BRAKE PARTS USING ONLY WATER-DAMPENED SHOP TOWELS. DO NOT CREATE BRAKE LINING DUST BY SANDING BRAKE LININGS WHEN SERVICING A VEHICLE. DISPOSE OF ALL DUST AND DIRT SUSPECTED OF CONTAINING ASBESTOS FIBERS USING ONLY SEALED AIRTIGHT BAGS OR CONTAINERS. FOLLOW ALL RECOMMENDED SAFETY PRACTICES PRESCRIBED BY THE OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH ADMINISTRATION (OSHA) AND THE ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY (EPA), F70R HANDLING AND DISPOSAL OF PRODUCTS CONTAINING ASBESTOS.

Caution: During service procedures, grease and other foreign material must be kept off the brake shoes, and the braking surfaces of the rotor and external surfaces of hub/bearing.

Remove

Brake Pedal Holding Tool Installed:

1. Using a brake pedal holding tool such as the one shown, depress the brake pedal past its first inch of travel, and secure it in this position. This will isolate the master cylinder from the brake hydraulic system, not allowing the fluid to drain from the reservoir.
2. Raise vehicle on jackstands or centered on a hoist.
Note: When removing the center cap from the wheel do not use a sharp or hard tool. Use of such a tool can mare the finish on the wheel and damage the center cap.

Wheel Center Cap Removal:

3. Remove the center cap from the wheel. Center cap is removed by inserting a trim stick into the notch on the center cap and prying it off the wheel.
4. Remove front wheels and tires.
5. Remove the banjo bolt securing the brake hose to the brake caliper. Inspect the brass washers for damage and replace as necessary.

Removing Caliper Guide Pin Bolts:

6. Remove the 2 bolts attaching the disc brake caliper to the caliper adapter.

Disc Brake Caliper Remove/Install:

7. Remove the disc brake caliper from the caliper adapter by first rotating free end of caliper away from caliper adapter. Then slide the opposite end of the caliper out from under the machined abutment on the caliper adapter.

Install
1. Lubricate both abutments on the caliper adapter with a liberal amount of Mopar Brake Grease, or an equivalent.

Caution: Use care when installing the caliper on the caliper adapter, to ensure the seals on the caliper guide pin bushings do not get damaged.

2. Carefully position the caliper and brake shoes on the caliper adapter by hooking lower or upper end of caliper under the machined abutment on the caliper adapter. Then rotate the caliper into position at the opposite end of the caliper adapter.

Caution: Extreme caution should be taken not to cross thread the caliper guide pin bolts.

3. Install the caliper guide pin bolts and tighten to a torque of 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.).
4. Install the banjo bolt securing the brake hose to the brake caliper. Make sure one brass washer is positioned on each side of the brake hose fitting where the banjo bolt goes through. Torque the banjo bolt to 48 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).
5. Install the wheel and tire.
6. Using a torque wrench, tighten the wheel mounting stud nuts in the proper sequence until all nuts are torqued to half the specified torque. Then repeat the tightening sequence to the full specified torque of 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.).
7. Install the center cap on the wheel
8. Remove jackstands or lower hoist.
9. Remove the brake pedal holding tool from the brake pedal.
10. Pump the brake pedal to seat the pads.
11. Bleed any air from the brake caliper. Refer to Brake Bleeding.
