Parking Brake Cable: Service and Repair

On this vehicle, Never attempt to repair the park brake output cable in any manner.
This vehicle has only 2 serviceable park brake cables. Each cable leads from the park brake lever output cable equalizer to either the left or right rear wheel park brake assembly. The park brake lever output cable is not replaceable as a separate component. It is replaced as part of the park brake lever.

Note: Remove only one rear park brake cable from rear brakes at a time. Failure to do so will result in high efforts required to connect park brake cables to equalizer or park brake lever at rear wheel brakes.

For replacement of the rear park brake cables follow the procedure as listed below.

Remove

Shift Knob Attachment:

1. Remove shift knob from shifter Shift knob is attached to shifter using an hex head set screw. Access to set screw is from the front side of the shift knob.

Shift Bezel Wiring Harness:

2. Remove shift bezel from center console. Shift bezel is removed by carefully pulling upward along the edge until the retaining clips unlatch from the center console.
3. Disconnect shift bezel wiring harness from vehicle wiring harness.

Center Console Front Attaching Screw:

4. Remove screw attaching center console to console bracket.

Attaching Screws At Front Of Center Console:

5. Remove the 4 screws mounting the storage tray and lid to the center console. Remove the lid and storage tray from the center console.
6. Raise park brake hand lever to the applied position. This is required for clearance to remove center console.
7. Remove center console from vehicle.
8. Lower park brake lever handle.

Locking Pin Installed In Park Brake Mechanism:

9. Grasp park brake lever output cable by hand and pull upward. Continue pulling on cable until a 3/16 inch drill bit can be inserted into handle and sector gear of park brake mechanism. This will lock the park brake mechanism and take tension off park brake cables.

Park Brake Cables At Equalizer:

10. Remove both rear park brake cables from park brake cable equalizer.
11. On side of vehicle requiring rear park brake cable replacement, move seat as far forward as possible and tilt the seat back to the full forward position.
12. Fold bottom of carpeting behind seat upward to access the park brake cable.

Park Brake Cable Routing Clip:

13. Remove nut attaching park brake cable routing clip to stud in floor pan.

Park Brake Cable Removal From Retaining Bracket:

14. Place Remover, Special Tool 8182 over end of park brake cable. Install a 1/2 inch wrench on hex end of Remover, Special Tool 8182. Using 1/2 inch wrench, push tool (without turning) toward park brake cable retaining bracket. This will collapse retaining fingers on park brake cable retainer and push park brake cable out of retaining bracket.
15. Raise vehicle on jackstands or centered on a frame contact type hoist.

Note: When removing the center cap from the wheel do not use a sharp or hard tool. Use of such a tool can damage the finish on the wheel and damage the center cap.

Center Cap Removal:

16. Remove center cap from wheel. Center cap is removed by inserting a trim stick into notch on center cap and prying it off wheel.
17. Remove rear wheel and tire assembly.

Park Brake Cable At Actuator:

18. Remove park brake cable from park brake shoe actuator located at rear of caliper adapter.

Park Brake Cable Removal From Caliper Adapter:

19. Remove park brake cable from caliper adapter. Park brake cable is removed from caliper adapter by pushing a 1/2 inch box wrench onto end of park brake cable retainer. This will collapse retaining fingers on park brake cable retainer and push park brake cable out of caliper adapter.

Reouting Clip Attachment To Body:

20. Remove nut attaching park brake cable routing clip to stud in body.
21. Grab sealing grommet at body. Pull sealing grommet and park brake cable out of the hole in the body.

Install
1. Spray the sealing grommet with Mopar, Silicone Spray Lube or an equivalent. This will make the installation of the sealing grommet into the body hole easier.
2. Install park brake cable into body hole making sure sealing grommet is installed as far as possible to insure proper sea].
3. Install park brake cable into caliper adapter. Be sure locking tabs on cable retainer are expanded to ensure cable is held securely in adapter.
4. Install park brake cable on park brake shoe actuator located at rear of caliper adapter.
5. Install park brake cable routing clip on stud in body. Install and securely tighten routing clip attaching nut.
6. Install rear wheel and tire assembly on vehicle. Tighten all wheel stud nuts in crisscross pattern to one-half specified torque. Then repeat pattern, fully tightening stud nuts to 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.).
7. Install center cap on wheel.
8. Lower vehicle.

Note: When pulling park brake cable and sealing grommet into body hole pull on the sealing grommet not the park brake cable

Park Brake Cable Sealing Grommet Installation:

9. From passenger compartment of vehicle, pull sealing grommet and park brake cable as far as possible into body hole. This is required to ensure an air and water tight seal is created between sealing grommet and body hole.

Note: When replacing the park brake cables, refer to illustration for the proper routing of the right and left park brake cables. The park brake cables must be routed per illustration.

Park Brake Cable Routing:

10. Route the park brake cable under the carpeting per illustration to the park brake cable retaining bracket on floor pan.
11. Install park brake cable into retaining bracket
Be sure tabs on park brake cable retainer, have expanded out to hold park brake cable in retaining bracket.
12. Install routing clip on park brake cable and on stud in floor pan. Install and securely tighten nut attaching routing clip to floor pan stud.
