Removal

1. Disconnect negative cable from battery.
2. Remove refrigerant from air conditioning system using a refrigerant recovery machine. Refer to Heat and Air Conditioning.
3. Remove right and left hood side panels. Refer to Body and Frame for procedure.
4. Mark hood position at hinges and remove hood. Refer to Body and Frame for procedure.
5. Remove engine compartment supports.
6. Drain cooling system.
7. Remove upper radiator crossmember.
8. Remove fan module electrical connector.
9. Remove fan module. Refer to Cooling System for procedures.
10. Remove air conditioning lines at condenser.
11. Remove coolant hoses from radiator and engine.
12. Remove radiator and condenser as an assembly.
13. Remove coolant pressure bottle. Refer to Cooling System for procedures.





14. Remove air inlet plenum from air cleaner and throttle bodies.
15. Release fuel pressure, disconnect fuel lines, and accelerator/speed control cables. Refer to Powertrain Management.
16. Remove heater hoses.
17. Remove heater tube attaching nuts from rear of engine and move tube aside for access to bell housing attaching bolts.
18. Disconnect vacuum hoses at brake booster, purge solenoid, Manifold Tuning Valve (MTV) solenoid, and speed control.
19. Disconnect all electrical connectors and ground straps.
20. Remove accessory drive belts.
21. Remove air conditioning lines at compressor.
22. Remove right headlamp module for easier access to compressor bolts. Refer to Lighting and Horns for procedure.
23. Remove air conditioning compressor mounting bolts and disconnect compressor electrical connector.
24. Remove compressor bracket from engine.
25. Remove compressor through front opening of engine compartment.
26. Disconnect electrical connector from air conditioning pressure transducer.





27. Remove air conditioning lines and filter/dryer.
28. Remove generator.
29. Remove power steering pump mounting bolts and set pump aside.
30. Hoist vehicle.
31. Drain engine oil and remove oil filter.
32. Loosen and remove V-Band clamps at exhaust manifold to catalytic converter connection.

NOTE: Do not re-use V-Band clamps.

33. Remove bolts at converter pipe support hangers. Lower exhaust enough for engine removal. Support exhaust system with wire or equivalent.
34. Disconnect starter wiring and remove starter.
35. Remove engine bell housing inspection cover and mark engine flex plate to drive plate position.
36. Remove bolts holding drive plate to flex plate.
37. Remove the lower engine bell housing to block bolts.
38. Disconnect crankshaft position sensor electrical connector and remove sensor from engine bell housing.
39. Loosen right and left lower engine mount to crossmember nuts, but do not remove.
40. Lower vehicle.
41. Attach lifting hoist to the front and rear of engine.

NOTE: It is recommended that an adjustable load leveling fixture be used for removing and installing engine.

42. Lift engine enough to support weight of engine only.
43. For ease of access to left engine mount bracket bolts remove Power Distribution Center (PDC) attaching screws and set PDC aside.
44. Remove engine mount brackets to block bolts. Leave mount brackets and isolators attached to crossmember.
45. Remove upper engine bell housing to block bolts.

CAUTION: The engine bell housing must be kept at its designed driveline angle to prevent propeller bushing damage.

46. Hoist engine from engine compartment.
