Mounting
NOTE: The extended mobility tires used on this vehicle have side walls which are much stiffer then the side walls on conventional tires. For this reason, the tires are much more difficult to mount then a conventional tire. Following the steps in this mounting procedure, no matter what manufactures tire changing equipment is used, will make mounting the tire as easy as possible. Following the steps in this procedure will also greatly reduce the chance of damaging a wheel when mounting a tire.CAUTION: When mounting the extended mobility tire used on this vehicle only a wheel clamp type tire changer can be used. This style of tire changer is manufactured by companies such as Coats and Hunter. Usage of any other style tire changer will cause damage to the wheel and be potentially dangerous for the operator to use on an extended mobility tire.
1. Using a shop towel and a cleaner such as Mopar (R) Super Clean or an equivalent, thoroughly clean all of the tire bead seating surfaces on the flanges of the wheel. Thoroughly inspect the wheel prior to mounting the tire.
NOTE: When installing the tire pressure transmitter, inspect the sealing O-ring at the bottom of the valve stem for any sign of damage or deterioration. Replace O-ring if necessary, before installing the pressure transmitter on the wheel. Also, be sure the surface of the wheel that the O-ring seals against is clean and not damaged.
2. Install the tire pressure transmitter on the wheel.
3. Tighten the tire pressure transmitter mounting nut to a torque of 9 Nm (80 inch lbs.). When torquing the tire pressure transmitter, hold the transmitter so it does not rotate. If the transmitter rotates so the top edge is not level with the wheel, damage to the transmitter will occur when mounting the tire. If the top edge of the transmitter is not level with the wheel it can be rotated into position by lightly tapping it with your hand.
CAUTION: Never attempt to mount the extended mobility tire used on this vehicle without applying mounting compound on the wheel. Failure to apply mounting compound will result in damage to the wheel and the bead of the tire.
4. Thoroughly coat all the surfaces of the wheel's upper and lower flange with a heavy application of tire mounting compound.
CAUTION: Never attempt to mount the extended mobility tire used on this vehicle without first applying mounting compound on the tire. Failure to apply the mounting compound will result in damage to the wheel and the bead of the tire.
5. Thoroughly coat all surfaces of upper and lower bead and bead flange on the tire with a heavy application of tire mounting compound.
NOTE: When mounting the wheel on the tire changer, the wheel must be mounted so that no damage will be done to the wheel when mounting the tire.
6. Mount the wheel on the tire changer per the tire changer manufacturers instructions.
7. The wheel must be rotated on the tire changer so that the tire pressure sensor/transmitter is located in a position that is at approximately 7 O'clock to the mounting arm on the tire changing equipment being used.
8. Position the tire on the wheel. Make sure that the rotational arrows on the sidewall of the tire are showing the correct tire rotation for the side of the vehicle the tire will be installed on.
9. With the tire pressure transmitter in the correct 7 O'clock position, place the bead head on the tire changer against the top flange of the wheel. Use the procedure provided by the tire changer manufacturer to unsure the bead head is correctly positioned against the flange of the wheel. Failure to do this will result in damage to the wheel when mounting the tire.
CAUTION: The positioning of the tire pressure transmitter and the tire in relation to each other is very important when mounting the bottom bead of the tire. This ensures that the last section of the tires bottom bead to be mounted to the rim will be at the tire pressure transmitter. This allows the bottom bead of the tire to be stretched over the upper flange of the wheel and drop past the pressure transmitter without causing damage to the transmitter.
NOTE: Do not let the tire slip on the wheel when starting to mount the bottom bead.
10. By hand, rotate the tire into the wheel as far as possible. The tire must be initially installed on the wheel so the bottom bead of the tire is positioned just forward of the tire pressure transmitter. Rotate the table on the tire changer, mounting the bottom bead of the tire onto the wheel.
11. The wheel must be rotated on the tire changer so that the valve stem is located in a position that is at approximately 5 O'clock to the mounting arm on the tire changing equipment being used.
CAUTION:
- The upper bead on the extended mobility tire is very difficult to mount onto the wheel. Be sure to follow the steps below when mounting the upper bead. Not following the recommended procedure will result in damage to the wheel, tire and pressure transmitter.
- Protective covers are to be used on the tire irons to protect the wheel from damage when mounting the tire.
- When inserting the tire irons into the wheel be sure they do not come in contact with the tire pressure transmitter. This will break the pressure transmitter off the valve stem.
12. Place 2 tire irons at 1 O'clock and 3 O'clock between the bead head of the tire changer and the valve stem. Using the tire irons push the upper bead of the tire down into the well of the wheel.
13. Keeping upper bead of tire pushed into the well of the wheel, rotate the table on the tire changer, mounting the upper bead of the tire onto the wheel.
14. Position the tire on the wheel so it is correctly match mounted.
15. Install only the original valve stem core into the valve stem of the tire pressure transmitter.
CAUTION:
- When the upper bead of the tire is seating to the wheel, the last section of the bead to seat can not be at the tire pressure transmitter. If this occurs, it means that the bead of the tire is binding on the transmitter. If this occurs deflate the tire and break the upper bead. Insert a tire iron near the transmitter and raise the bead of the tire over the flange of the wheel and release.
- When seating the bead of the tire it should not be necessary to inflate the tire to a pressure greater then 45 psi. The bead should normally seat when the tire is inflated to a pressure between 20 and 40 psi. If it is necessary to inflate the tire to a pressure exceeding 45 psi to seat the beads, a hose extender, a clip on air chuck and tire safety cage are to be used. Never exceed a pressure of 80 psi when seating the beads of the tire.
16. Inflate the tire to seat the upper and bottom beads.
17. Install the original or an OEM replacement valve stem cap on the valve stem.
18. Using a soap solution, check that no air leak is present where the valve stem mounts to the wheel.
19. Balance the tire/wheel assembly using the correct procedure for using wheel flange mount and stick on wheel weights.
20. Install the tire/wheel in the correct location on the vehicle for the required tire rotation.
