CAUTION: Do not clamp the shock absorber in a vise by the body of the shock absorber. The shock absorber must be clamped in the vise using the lower mounting eye of the shock absorber.

DISASSEMBLE
1. Install the shock absorber vertically in a vise, using the lower isolator bushing of the shock absorber.
2. Mark the coil spring and the shock absorber right or left, according to which side of the vehicle the shock absorber was removed from, and which shock absorber the coil spring was removed from.

WARNING: When compressing the coil spring for removal from shock absorber, the first full top and bottom coil of the coil spring must be captured by the jaws of the coil spring compressor.

3. Compress shock absorber coil spring using Professional Services Equipment Spring Compressor GP-2020-C3.5 or an equivalent. Install an A-20 spring shoe on the top and bottom of the spring compressor.

4. Compress the coil spring enough to allow the coil spring upper retainer to be removed from coil spring and shock absorber.
5. Un-compress the coil spring and remove the spring compressor from the coil spring.
6. Remove the coil spring from the shock absorber.

7. Remove the jounce bumper and plastic collar from the shaft of the shock absorber.
8. Inspect the shock absorber for any condition of shaft binding over the full stroke of the shock absorber shaft.
9. Inspect the components of the shock absorber for the following:
- Shock absorber upper and lower isolator bushings for damage or deterioration.
- Inspect the coil spring for any sign of damage and replace if required.
- Inspect the jounce bumper for cracks and signs of deterioration.
- Inspect the plastic collar for cracks and signs of deterioration.
10. Replace any components of the shock absorber assembly found to be worn or defective during the inspection, before assembling the shock absorber.

ASSEMBLE
1. Install the plastic collar and jounce bumper on the shaft of the shock absorber. The jounce bumper must be installed with the tapered end down.

CAUTION: When installing the coil spring, the round coil of the spring must be installed down so it is on the lower spring seat and the flat coil of the spring up so it will be against the spring retainer.

2. Install the coil spring on the shock absorber. Be sure the end of the bottom coil is seated correctly on the spring seat of the shock absorber.

WARNING: When installing the spring compressor on the coil spring, the first full top and bottom coil of the spring must be fully captured by the jaws of the coil spring compressor.

3. Install the spring compressor on the coil spring.
4. Compress the coil spring enough to allow the upper retainer for the coil spring to be installed on the coil spring and top of shock absorber.

5. Position the upper retainer on the coil spring so the end of the upper coil is not positioned at the cut-out in the retainer.
6. Relieve all tension from the spring compressor. After all spring tension has been remove from the spring compressor, remove it from the coil spring.
7. Install the shock absorber back in the vehicle.
