Intermittent Extended Crank, Hard Start, Engine Cranks But No Start When Engine Is At Operating Temperature (Hot Soak) (Replace Powertrain Control Module (PCM))

Models:
2005-2007 Pontiac Vibe

with 1.8L 4-Cylinder Gas Engine with MFI (VIN 8 - RPO LV6)

Supercede:

This bulletin is being revised to add model years and updated PCM part numbers. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 05-06-04-074 (Section 06 - Engine/Propulsion System).

Condition

Some customers may comment on the following conditions:

Intermittent extended crank or hard start when the engine is still at operating temperature (hot soak). Engine cranks for approximately 3 seconds, starts, may miss after starting, then clears and operates normally for the duration of the drive cycle.

The engine cranks but will not start. Diagnosis may show no injector pulse or spark during cranking. Also, the scan tool may fail to initialize with the PCM.

Cause

These conditions may be caused by the following:

The PCM calibration may not be maximized for hot restart.

The PCM may have experienced an internal fault.

Correction

Perform the appropriate diagnosis:

Refer to Hard Start in SI.

Refer to Engine Cranks but Does Not Run diagnostic in SI.

If the above diagnosis leads to a PCM fault, replace the PCM with the appropriate part number listed below. Refer to Powertrain Control Module (PCM) Replacement in SI.
