Front Brake Caliper Replacement (GXP)

Front Brake Caliper Replacement (GXP)

Tools Required

J 23738-A Hand Vacuum Pump

Removal Procedure

1. Inspect the brake fluid level in the brake master cylinder reservoir.

Caution: Refer to Brake Fluid Effects on Paint and Electrical Components Caution (Brake Fluid Effects on Paint and Electrical Components Caution)

Warning: Refer to Brake Fluid Irritant Warning (Brake Fluid Irritant Warning).

Note: Do not completely empty the brake master cylinder reservoir.

Note: The brake fluid level must be midway between the maximum brake fluid level marking and the minimum brake fluid level marking.

2. If required, use J 23738-A to remove some brake fluid until the brake fluid level is midway between the maximum brake fluid level marking and the minimum brake fluid level marking.

Danger: To avoid any vehicle damage, serious personal injury or death when major components are removed from the vehicle and the vehicle is supported by a hoist, support the vehicle with jack stands at the opposite end from which the components are being removed and strap the vehicle to the hoist.

Warning: Refer to Safety Glasses Warning (Safety Glasses Warning).

3. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle (Service and Repair).
4. Remove the front wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation (Service and Repair).

5. Install 2 opposite wheel nuts (1), with the flat side of the wheel nut against the brake rotor to retain the brake rotor to the wheel hub.

Warning: Refer to Brake Dust Warning (Brake Dust Warning)

6. Remove the front disc brake pads. Refer to Front Disc Brake Pads Replacement (Base and GT) (Front Disc Brake Pads Replacement (Base and GT))Front Disc Brake Pads Replacement (GXP) (Front Disc Brake Pads Replacement (GXP)).
7. Remove the brake hose to brake caliper banjo bolt (1).
8. Remove the brake hose (4) from the brake caliper (3).

Note: Plug the exposed end of the brake hose (4) in order to prevent fluid loss and contamination.

9. Plug the exposed end of the brake hose (4).

Note: Plug the exposed brake hose hole of the brake caliper (3) in order to prevent contamination.

10. Plug the exposed brake hose hole of the brake caliper (3).
11. Discard the brake caliper banjo bolt (1) and copper washers (2).

12. Remove the brake caliper to knuckle mounting bolts (2).
13. Inspect the brake caliper to knuckle mounting bolts (2) for corrosion.
14. Replace the brake caliper to knuckle mounting bolts (2) if necessary.

Note: If the brake pads are to be removed from the brake caliper, make sure that the brake pads are installed in their original positions. Failure to comply will cause the brake pads to be seated incorrectly and may effect the braking efficiency.

15. Remove the brake caliper (3) from the steering knuckle (1).

Installation Procedure

1. Prepare the brake caliper to steering knuckle mounting bolts (2) and the threaded mounting holes of the brake caliper (3):

* If the brake caliper to steering knuckle mounting bolts (2) are to be reused, thoroughly clean any residue from the threads of the brake caliper to steering knuckle mounting bolts (2) by using denatured alcohol or equivalent.
* Thoroughly clean any residue from the threaded mounting holes of the brake caliper (3) by using denatured alcohol or equivalent.

2. Make sure that the NEW/EXISTING brake caliper to steering knuckle mounting bolts (2) are dry.
3. Apply threadlocker GM P/N 12345493 (Canadian P/N 10953488) or an equivalent to the threads of the brake caliper to steering knuckle mounting bolts (2).
4. Allow the threadlocker to cure for approximately 10 minutes.
5. Install the brake caliper (3) to the steering knuckle (1).

Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution (Fastener Caution).

Note: Do not use an impact wrench to tighten the brake caliper to steering knuckle mounting bolts (2). Failure to comply may cause damage to the brake caliper to steering knuckle mounting bolts (2)

6. Install the NEW/EXISTING brake caliper to steering knuckle mounting bolts (2) and tighten to 130 Nm (96 lb ft).
7. Check the serviceability of the brake pads. Refer to Brake Pad Inspection (Testing and Inspection).
8. Install the NEW/EXISTING brake pads to the brake caliper if required. Refer to Front Disc Brake Pads Replacement (Base and GT) (Front Disc Brake Pads Replacement (Base and GT))Front Disc Brake Pads Replacement (GXP) (Front Disc Brake Pads Replacement (GXP)).

9. Remove the plug from the brake hose hole of the brake caliper (3).
10. Remove the plug from the exposed end of the brake hose (4).
11. Assemble the NEW brake caliper banjo bolt (1) and the NEW copper washers (2) to the brake hose (4).
12. Install the brake caliper banjo bolt, brake hose, and washer assembly to the brake caliper (3) and tighten the brake caliper banjo bolt to 35 Nm (25 lb ft).
13. Bleed the hydraulic brake system. Refer to Hydraulic Brake System Bleeding (Manual) (Service and Repair)Hydraulic Brake System Bleeding (Pressure) (Service and Repair).
14. Seat the brake caliper pistons and brake pads by applying the brake pedal approximately 2/3 of its travel distance and slowly releasing the brake pedal. Perform this procedure a few times until the brake pedal application becomes firm.

15. Remove the 2 opposite wheel nuts (1), from the wheel studs.
16. Install the front wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation (Service and Repair).
17. Lower the vehicle to the ground.
18. Burnish the brake pads and rotors if required. Refer to Brake Pad and Rotor Burnishing (Brake Pad and Rotor Burnishing).
