Condition

Some customers may comment on an accessory drive belt squeal noise that may be present when the engine is cold and generally within the first few minutes of operation until the engine is warmed up.

Do not mistake this noise with a characteristic "start up belt chirp" noise that may occur on some high feature V6 (HFV6) manual transmission vehicles (this is a normal condition that is present only on start up for 2-3 seconds).

Cause

The power steering pump pulley lateral runout may be out of specification causing a belt squeal.

Correction

After verifying that the vehicle has the condition described above, refer to the following procedure.

1. At engine idle inspect the power steering pump pulley. Look for visible signs that the power steering pump pulley is out of round. If the pulley shows signs of being out of round, replace the pulley with P/N 92218309. Refer to Power Steering Pump Pulley Replacement (3.6L Engine) in SI. If there is no noticeable condition proceed with the bulletin
2. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement.

3. Inspect for power steering pump pulley lateral runout by spinning the pulley and measuring runout on the belt inner ribs of the power steering pulley (1). DO NOT check the runout via the outer belt flanges. Using a dial indicator, check the lateral runout specification (1). The correct specification is 0-0.4 mm (0-0.016 in). If outside of specification, replace the power steering pump pulley. Refer to Power Steering Pump Pulley Replacement (3.6L Engine) in SI
4. If the belt squeal is still present after completion of this bulletin, refer to Corporate Bulletin Number 08-06-01-008 (Diagnosing Accessory Drive Belt/Serpentine Belt Noise and Availability and Use of Kent-Moore EN-49228 Laser Alignment Tool-Drive Belt).
