Steering/Restraints - Knocking Noise When Turning
TECHNICALBulletin No.: 09-09-41-001
Date: March 10, 2009
Subject:
Knock Noise from Steering Wheel While Turning (Apply Flocked Tape to Steering Wheel Inflatable Restraint Module)
Models:
2008-2009 Pontiac G8
Condition
Some customers may comment about a knock noise coming from the steering wheel or the steering column when making turning maneuvers 90 degrees in either direction.
Cause
This condition may be caused by the steering wheel inflatable restraint module sliding from side to side, resulting in the knock noise. Decreasing the lateral clearance of the module locating pins will stop the knock.
Correction
After verifying that the customer's vehicle has the condition described above, apply flocked tape to the module following the procedure below.
Throughout the service procedure, ensure that you conform to the SIR Disabling and Enabling service precautions found in Service Information (SI).
1. Disable the supplemental inflatable restraint (SIR) system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling in SI.
2. Remove the module. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Replacement in SI. Right Hand Side of Module (Screwdriver Pointing to Flocked Tape in Installed Position) Left Hand Side of Module (Showing Flocked Tape in Installed Position)
3. Apply one thickness of 3M(TM) Scotchmate Reclosable Fastener, P/N MP3526/MP3527 (or equivalent), into each of the module locator slots as shown above. Two strips, approximately 12 mm (0.47 in) wide and 34-40 mm (1.34-1.57 in) in length will be required.
4. Reinstall the module. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Replacement in SI.
5. Enable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling in SI.
6. Test the operation of the horn to ensure that the module isn't installed into the steering wheel too tightly.
