Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement
Removal Procedure
Danger: To avoid any vehicle damage, serious personal injury or death when major components are removed from the vehicle and the vehicle is supported by a hoist, support the vehicle with jack stands at the opposite end from which the components are being removed and strap the vehicle to the hoist.
Warning: Refer to Safety Glasses Warning (Safety Glasses Warning).
1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle (Service and Repair).
Important: Observing the orientation of the intermediate steering shaft (1) with reference to the pinion shaft (3) will minimize the potential of incorrect steering column assembly alignment.
2. Mark the intermediate steering shaft (1) in relation to the pinion shaft (3).
3. Remove the intermediate steering shaft to pinion shaft retaining bolt (2).
Important: Bolts with micro-encapsulated thread sealant must be discarded after removal.
4. Disconnect the intermediate shaft (2) from the pinion shaft (3).
Discard the bolt.
5. Lower the vehicle.
Warning: Refer to SIR Warning (SIR Warning).
6. Disable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling (Service and Repair).
7. Remove the driver side instrument panel lower trim panel assembly. Refer to Knee Bolster Replacement (Service and Repair).
8. Remove the driver side instrument panel lower left trim plate assembly. Refer to Instrument Panel Retainer Replacement (Service and Repair).
9. Remove the driver side instrument panel lower trim panel retainer. Refer to Instrument Panel Retainer Replacement (Service and Repair).
10. Remove the driver side air outlet duct - floor. Refer to Instrument Panel Outer Air Outlet Deflector Replacement - Left Side (Instrument Panel Outer Air Outlet Deflector Replacement - Left Side).
Important: Observing the orientation of the steering column shaft (1) with reference to the intermediate steering shaft (3) will minimize the potential of incorrect steering column assembly alignment.
11. Mark the steering column shaft (1) in relation to the intermediate shaft (3).
Important: Bolts with micro-encapsulated thread sealant must be discarded after removal.
12. Remove the steering column shaft to intermediate steering shaft retaining bolt (2).
Discard the bolt.
13. Disconnect the steering column shaft (1) from the intermediate steering shaft (3).
Important: Pull the intermediate steering shaft grommet (1) from the cabin side of the mod plate (5) to detach.
14. Detach the intermediate steering shaft grommet (1).
15. Remove the intermediate shaft (2).
Installation procedure
1. Install the intermediate steering shaft (3).
Important: Push the intermediate shaft grommet (4) from the cabin side of the mod plate (5).
2. Mount the intermediate shaft grommet (4).
Important: The steering column shaft and intermediate steering shaft splines must be installed in the position recorded during removal and aligned with the marks previously made.
3. Connect the steering column shaft (1) to the intermediate steering shaft (3).
Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution (Fastener Caution).
4. Install the NEW steering column shaft to intermediate steering shaft retaining bolt (2).
Tighten the bolt to 28 Nm (21 lb ft).
5. Install the driver side air outlet duct - floor. Refer to Instrument Panel Outer Air Outlet Deflector Replacement - Left Side (Instrument Panel Outer Air Outlet Deflector Replacement - Left Side).
6. Install the driver side instrument panel lower trim panel retainer. Refer to Instrument Panel Retainer Replacement (Service and Repair).
7. Install the driver side instrument panel lower left trim plate assembly. Refer to Instrument Panel Retainer Replacement (Service and Repair).
8. Install the driver side instrument panel lower trim panel assembly. Refer to Knee Bolster Replacement (Service and Repair).
9. Enable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling (Service and Repair).
10. Raise vehicle.
Important: The intermediate steering shaft and pinion shaft splines must be installed in the position recorded during removal and aligned with the marks previously made.
11. Connect the intermediate steering shaft (1) to the pinion shaft (3).
12. Install NEW the intermediate steering shaft to pinion shaft retaining bolt (2).
Tighten the bolt to 28 Nm (21 lb ft).
13. Lower the vehicle to the ground.
