Body - Hood Latch Release Is Hard To Operate

TECHNICAL

Bulletin No.: 09-08-63-003

Date: March 04, 2009

Subject:
Hood Primary Latch Release Requires Excessive Effort or Will Not Function, Frozen Cable (Install Cable Tie, Install Revised Hood Latch Release Cable)

Models:
2008-2009 Pontiac G8

Condition

Some owners may comment that the primary hood latch release inside of the vehicle requires an excessive amount of effort to operate or will not function. This condition may occur in colder regions during freezing outdoor temperatures.

Cause

Moisture may collect in the low-lying area of the hood release cable assembly at the latch end of the cable. This moisture can corrode the inner cable, causing higher than designed operating effort. In extreme weather conditions, the moisture may collect and freeze, preventing the cable from moving within the cable casing. In these conditions, the hood latch may not release.

Correction # 1 (For vehicles built prior to VIN breakpoint 8L147421)

1. Remove the right radiator grille. Refer to Radiator Grille Replacement in SI.

2. Remove the hood latch protector by removing the push pin retainer (1).

3. Disconnect the hood release cable from the hood latch.

4. Remove the left side hinge pillar trim panel. Refer to Body Hinge Pillar Trim Panel Replacement in SI.

5. Remove the left side knee bolster. Refer to Knee Bolster Replacement in SI.

6. Disconnect the hood release cable (1) from the hood release handle (2).

7. Rotate the hood release cable and detach the hood release barrel (2) from the hood release handle (1).

8. Remove the hood release grommet from the front of the dash.

Note:
Attach a piece of string around the hood release cable at the handle end. This will ease the installation of the hood release cable through the engine compartment.

9. Remove the hood release cable from the vehicle from the under hood side, pulling the string through the hole in the front of the dash.

10. Transfer the string to the release handle end of the new hood release cable assembly.

11. Route the string and cable through the front of the dash into the passenger compartment.

12. Remove the string from the hood release cable.

13. Seat the hood release cable grommet into the front of the dash.

14. Attach the hood release cable barrel (2) to the hood release handle (1).

15. Rotate and connect the hood release cable (1) to the hood release handle assembly (2).

16. Install the left side knee bolster. Refer to Knee Bolster Replacement in SI.

17. Install the left side hinge pillar trim panel. Refer to Body Hinge Pillar Trim Panel Replacement in SI.

18. Reinstall the hood release cable to the latch and install the protector and push pin.

19. Locate the two holes in the upper tie bar on the passenger side of the hood latch assembly (1).

20. insert the cable tie, GM P/N 12337820 (or equivalent), through the two holes as shown (1).

21. Position the hood release cable in front of the holes and secure the cable as shown (1). Trim the cable tie to length.

22. Reinstall the right grille. Refer to Radiator Grille Replacement in SI.

Correction # 2 (For vehicles built after VIN breakpoint 8L147421)

Note:
On vehicles equipped with the 6.2L engine (RPO LS3) and automatic transmission (RPO MYC), the four fasteners on the top of the front bumper fascia will need to be removed to create the required hand access.

1. Remove the right radiator grille. Refer to Radiator Grille Replacement in SI.

2. Remove the hood latch protector by removing the push pin retainer (1).

3. Disconnect the hood release cable from the hood latch.

Note:
The use of a heat gun will accelerate the thawing process but care must be used to avoid damaging the cable casing and surrounding components with excessive heat.

4. Allow the hood release cable to hang loosely in front of the front bumper (1). Allow the cable to thaw and let the moisture drain out.

5. Reinstall the hood release cable to the latch and install the protector and push pin.

6. Locate the two holes in the upper tie bar on the passenger side of the hood latch assembly (1).

7. Insert the cable tie, GM P/N 12337820 (or equivalent), through the two holes as shown (1).

8. Position the hood release cable in front of the holes and secure the cable as shown (1). Trim the cable tie to length.

9. Reinstall the right grille. Refer to Radiator Grille Replacement in SI.
