Subject: Front Floor Mat Retainer Pin Missing/Broken (Replace Floor Carpet Mat Retainer)
Models:
2008-2009 Pontiac G8
Condition
Some customers may comment on a missing or broken front floor carpet mat retainer.
Cause
This condition may be caused by the retainer not withstanding repeated removal/installation of the front floor mat.
Correction
Replace the front floor carpet mat retainer following the steps below:
1. Remove the front seat outer rear track cover:
1. Move the seat forward.
Important
Grasp the rear edge of the outer rear track cover (1) and lift upward to disengage the retaining clips (2 and 3).
2. Remove the outer rear track cover (1) from the seat rail.
2. Remove the front seat outer front track cover:
Important
Grasp the rear edge of the outer front track cover (1) and carefully pry upward to disengage the rear retainer (4).
1. Disengage the rear retainer (4) on the front seat outer front track cover (3).
2. Remove by sliding the outer front track cover (3) forward, making sure to disengage the front retainer (2).
3. Remove the front door sill trim plate by lifting upward to disengage it from the sill panel.
4. Remove the instrument panel outer trim cover:
1. Grasp the lower area of the outer trim cover (1) and carefully pull to disengage the retaining clips.
2. Remove by rotating the trim cover upward to disengage the remaining clip.
5. Remove the instrument panel side trim panel:
1. Grasp the front lower area of the side trim panel (2) and carefully pull to disengage the retaining clips.
2. Remove by rotating the trim panel upward to disengage the remaining clips.
6. Remove the front body hinge pillar trim panel:
1. Remove the two retaining screws from the trim panel.
2. Disengage and remove the trim panel by pulling upward and then rearward.
7. In order to gain access to the underside of the carpet, remove the two forward carpet retainers. The first retainer (1) is located on the carpet insulator, the second (2) is located underneath.
Note
The graphics below show a repair of the carpet mat retainer at the outboard location. The steps would be the same when repairing the inboard retainer.
8. Move the seat rearward and pull back enough of the carpet to enable access to the affected retainer.
9. Using an X-ACTO(R) knife (1), or equivalent, scribe/cut the jute and underlayment enough to remove the underside flanged retainer.
10. Remove and discard the old retainer (1) and pin along with any loose carpet fibers that may interfere with the installation of the new retainer/pin.
11. Insert the flanged retainer from the underside of the carpet and, by hand, engage the post of the new pin to the retainer.
12. Ensuring no contact with wiring or other delicate components, support the underside of the retainer with a wood block, socket, or similar tool.
Note
Positive retention is achieved when there is no gap between the carpet and retainer, and when any sideways/twisting movement of the retainer is difficult.
13. Using a rubber mallet, drive the post of the topside pin (1) into the retainer, completing the assembly. Check for positive retention, as noted above.
14. Verify that a floor mat is able to be installed and removed without any separation of the carpet mat retainer.
15. Reposition the carpet to the floor and install the under insulator forward retainer (2), then the topside forward retainer (1).
Important
Ensure the body hinge pillar trim clip is correctly engaged in the A-pillar inner panel.
16. Engage the front body hinge pillar trim panel into the A-pillar sheet metal. Install the two pillar trim panel retaining screws and tighten.
Tighten
Tighten the screws to 2 Nm (18 lb in).
17. Reinstall the following components, noting the detail pointed out in the removal:
- Instrument panel side trim panel
- Instrument panel outer trim cover
- Front door sill trim plate
- Front seat outer front track cover
- Front seat outer rear track cover
