Rear Wheel Hub Assembly Inspection
Rear Wheel Hub Assembly Inspection
Warning: Refer to Safety Glasses Warning (Safety Glasses Warning).
Danger: To avoid any vehicle damage, serious personal injury or death when major components are removed from the vehicle and the vehicle is supported by a hoist, support the vehicle with jack stands at the opposite end from which the components are being removed and strap the vehicle to the hoist.
1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle (Service and Repair).
2. Remove the rear wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation (Service and Repair).
3. Remove the brake disc. Refer to Rear Brake Rotor Replacement (Service and Repair).
4. Clean the wheel mounting surface of the rear wheel hub assembly of any loose debris, rust, and/or corrosion.
5. Install the dial indicator plate (2) to the rear knuckle assembly (1).
Important: The dial gauge mounting base (3) must be securely mounted to the dial indicator plate (2).
Important: The hub runout should not be measured on the top of the rotor.
6. Position a dial indicator (5) fitted with a roller, on the wheel mounting surface of the rear wheel hub assembly perpendicular to the surface (4).
7. Slowly rotate the rear wheel hub assembly (1) one complete revolution in order to find the low spot.
8. Set the dial indicator to zero at the low spot.
9. Slowly rotate the rear wheel hub assembly one more complete revolution and measure the total amount of runout.
Maximum rear wheel hub assembly radial runout 0.025 mm (0.001 in)
Important: The dial gauge mounting base (3) must be securely mounted to the dial indicator plate (2).
10. Position a dial indicator (5) on the centre of the wheel mounting flange of the rear wheel hub assembly (4) perpendicular to the surface.
11. Push the wheel mounting flange towards the centre of the car, set the dial indicator to zero.
12. Pull the wheel mounting flange towards the outside of the car and measure the total amount of axial end float.
The rear wheel hub assembly has zero axial end float (preload).
13. If the measurements are not within the specified range replace the rear wheel bearing. Refer to Rear Wheel Bearing and Hub Replacement (Rear Suspension).
14. Remove the dial indicator plate (1) to the rear knuckle assembly (2).
15. Install the brake disc. Refer to Rear Brake Rotor Replacement (Service and Repair).
16. Install the rear wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation (Service and Repair).
17. Remove the safety stands.
18. Lower the vehicle to the ground.
