TECHNICAL

Bulletin No.: 09-08-44-011

Date: April 28, 2009

Subject: XM Module Mounting Bracket Loose, Rattles, Poor Retention or Hanging in Luggage Area (Increase Tension of Mounting Bracket Retaining Clips)

Models:
2009 Pontiac G8

Condition

Some customers may comment that while loading the trunk they may have bumped the XM module, knocking it loose from the underside of the rear package shelf, resulting in a rattle noise.

Cause

This condition is caused by the XM mounting bracket locking tabs not having sufficient force to retain the module if it receives an impact from luggage during loading or unloading of the trunk.

Correction

Use the following procedure to increase the tension of the XM module mounting bracket retaining clips.

Removing XM Module Bracket (Mounted Position)

Tip
It is not necessary to remove the XM module from the bracket in order to perform this procedure.

1. Locate the XM module under the rear package shelf. Release the two retaining tabs (1) as shown or push on the bracket toward the front of vehicle and pull downward, which may release it without the need for tools.
2. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the module.

XM Module Bracket Retaining Clip As Installed

3. Examine the retaining clips. The plastic retainers are cast with the widest part of the clip open 6 mm (0.24 in).

Important
In the next step, the clip will soften and warm very quickly. ONLY use the minimum amount of heat required to do the job. If there are any signs of melting or smoke, you are heating the clip too rapidly.

4. Using a small propane or butane radiant (flameless) thermal torch, heat the plastic clip. While heat is applied, open the clip using a screwdriver to obtain an 8 mm (0.32 in) gap.

5. Measure the clip opening to verify you have obtained an 8 mm (0.32 in) gap.

Foam Weatherstrip Applied to Bracket

6. On the side of the bracket that mounts directly to the rear package shelf, apply a strip of adhesive-backed foam as shown. While the dimensions are not critical for this application, 3/4" wide x 7/16" thick sponge rubber weatherstrip, such as Kent Industries P46505 (or equivalent) has been found to work well for this application.
7. Install the electrical connectors to the XM module.
8. Install the XM module bracket to the under side of the rear package shelf and push firmly until seated.
9. Verify proper retention of the module bracket.
