10. Timing Chain, Sprocket, and Tensioner Removal
Camshaft Timing Chain, Sprocket, and Tensioner Removal
Removal Procedure
1. Set the No. 1 cylinder to TDC/compression.
1. Turn the crankshaft pulley until its groove and the timing mark 0 of the timing chain cover (2) are aligned.
2. Check that each timing mark of the camshaft timing gear (1) and sprocket are aligned with each timing mark located on the bearing caps as shown in the illustration. If not, turn the crankshaft by 1 revolution, 360 degrees, to align the timing marks as above.
2. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
3. Remove the chain tensioner assembly. Refer to Timing Chain Tensioner Removal (Overhaul).
4. Remove the timing chain cover assembly. Refer to Timing Chain Housing Removal (Overhaul).
5. Remove the timing chain cover oil seal.
6. Remove the chain tensioner slipper.
7. Remove the 2 bolts (1, 2) and chain vibration damper.
8. Hold the hexagonal portion of the camshaft with a wrench and turn the camshaft timing gear assembly counterclockwise to loosen the chain (1) between the camshaft timing gears.
Note: Be sure to release the chain from the sprocket completely.
9. With the chain loosened, release the chain from the camshaft timing gear assembly and place it on the camshaft timing gear assembly (2).
10. Turn the camshaft clockwise to return it to the original position and remove the chain.
11. Remove the chain vibration damper.
