Thermostatic Air Cleaner: Description and Operation
Fig.17 - Preheated Air Intake:
To prevent carburetor icing and promote better fuel atomization heated air, drawn from a shroud around the exhaust manifold, is mixed with outside air in the air cleaner. The system consists of a double inlet air cleaner, Fig. 17, with a distribution flap for regulating warm and cold air. The distribution flap is controlled by a wax pellet type thermostat which is fixed to the air cleaner body in the intake stream.
When intake air temperature is below 66 F., the thermostat contracts, shutting the flap to the outside air intake. When intake air temperature exceeds 95 F, the thermostat expands, closing off the warm air intake.
