Introduction:

Due to a possible casting problem, the oil filter adapter must be inspected and/or replaced on 900 models within the VIN Serial Number ranges listed below. Owners of affected vehicles will be notified to have their vehicle modified at their earliest Convenience.

All vehicles in dealer inventory must be inspected or inspected and modified prior to retail sale.

Cars Affected:

1996 900s equipped with 2.3 liter naturally aspirated engines within the VIN Serial Number ranges:

T2039017-T2043225

T7009384-T7011452

Parts:

Oil filter adapter 91 39 239
O-ring 91 37 993
Oil filter 91 44 445
Loctite 518 02 44 970 (or source locally)

An initial parts order of adapters and 0-rings equal to 75% of the vehicles wholesaled to your dealership as of July 12, 1996, will be shipped automatically on or about July 19, 1996. If our records indicate that you have not received any affected vehicles, no automatic parts shipment will take place. Order additional parts as needed using VOR ordering procedures.

Action:

A. First inspect the campaign plate on the vehicle. If it is stamped in position B5 with a numeral from "1" to "8", no further action is required. (Some vehicles were repaired at the Ports-of-Entry.)

B. If the plate is not stamped, you may inspect the back of the oil filter adapter for a production date code indicated in a circle (see Figure 1). If the date code reads "4 96", the oil filter adapter must be replaced. If it reads anything other than "4 96", no further action is required other than stamping the campaign plate to indicate the vehicle has been inspected.

1. Raise the car and remove the right-hand air deflector (spoiler).

2. Remove the oil filter.

3. Remove the adapter housing.

4. Clean the sealing surface, being sure to remove all gasket material and traces of oil.

5. Apply Loctite 518 to the sealing surface of the adapter housing.

6. Change oil pipe's 0-ring and fit the new adapter housing.

7. Fit a new oil filter. Refit the air deflector. Lower the car to the floor.

8. Check the oil level in the engine. Refill as necessary.

9. Warm-up the engine and check for leaks.
