Steering servo pipe
To remove

Important: Scrupulous cleanliness must always be observed when carrying out any work involving hydraulic components.

1. Remove the engine cover.

2. Remove the nut from the rear engine mounting.

3. V6: Fit the lifting eyes, one on the rear of the cylinder head and one on the front cylinder head (remove one bolt first). Fit 83 95 287 Holder.

Note: Place protective pads under the legs of the lifting beam to avoid damaging the paintwork.

Position 83 94 850 Lifting beam on the wings and hook it onto the engine's rear lifting eyebolt.

4. Turn the steering wheel and wheels to the straight-ahead position and fixate the steering wheel.
Remove the bolt securing the steering column shaft to the steering gear, and push the steering column shaft upwards, withdrawing it from the steering gear.

5. Pinch the intake hose to the servo pump and the return hose to the reservoir with two 30 07 739 Hose pinch-off pliers .

6. Remove the battery cover, battery and battery tray.

7. Slacken the bolts securing the exhaust pipe to the turbocharger so that the pipe can be rotated slightly.
8. Raise the car.

9. Detach the exhaust pipe from the catalytic converter.
10. V6: Detach the exhaust pipe from the rear exhaust manifold. Suspend the pipe using a strap.
11. Remove the right-hand wheel and wing liner.

12. Remove the reinforcement plates.
13. Slowly lower the subframe by removing the centre bolts.

14. Remove the clamps from the rear pipe (R4: 2 clamps, V6: 3 clamps).

15. Remove the cable ties from the rear pipe and the clamp that secures the pipe to the steering gear.

16. Place a bowl under the front pipe coupling and split the pipe.

17. Place a bowl under the banjo nipple on the steering gear and remove the banjo nipple.

To Fit
1. Position the pipe, starting from the rear.
2. Remove the rear transit protection and thread the banjo nipple.

3. Fit the rear clamp to the steering gear.
4. Secure the return hose to the suction pipe with two cable ties.

5. Tighten the banjo nipple
Tightening torque 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.)
6. Check that the seal between the steering gear and the body is correctly seated.
7. Raise the subframe and thread the centre bolts.

Note: Do not confuse the centre subframe bolts with any other bolts. The centre subframe bolts have a small washer and a 20 mm head.

8. Fit the reinforcement plates.
Tightening torque 65 Nm (48 ft. lbs.)
9. Tighten the bolts securing the subframe.
Tightening torque 100 Nm +45° (74 ft. lbs. +45°)

10. Attach the exhaust pipe to the catalytic converter and tighten the bolts securing the exhaust pipe to the turbocharger.
11. V6: Connect the exhaust pipe to the rear exhaust manifold.
12. Remove the front transit protection and thread the front pipe coupling.

Note: Be careful with the O-ring.

13. Fit the clamps.

14. Fit the plastic support.
15. Tighten the front pipe coupling. Check that the coupling on the rear suction line is at least 5 mm from the subframe.
16. Fit the right-hand wing liner.
17. Lower the car to the floor.

18. Remove the pinch-off pliers.

19. Remove the lifting beam.
20. Fit the nut on the rear engine mounting.
Tightening torque 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.)

21. Tighten the bolts securing the exhaust pipe to the turbocharger.

22. Fit the battery tray, battery and battery cover.
23. Fit the engine cover.

24. Check that the steering wheel and wheels are in the straight-ahead position and attach the steering column shaft to the steering gear.
Tightening torque 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.)
25. Fill the system with fluid and bleed as described under Bleeding the power steering system.
26. Check for leaks at the pump connections.
27. Road test.
28. Set the clock.
