Rear Output Shaft Seal Replacement

Special Tools
* J 37668-A Output Shaft Seal Installer
* J 45380 Transfer Case Rear Bushing Remover and Installer

Removal Procedure




1. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle (Service and Repair).
2. Remove the rear propeller shaft. Refer to Rear Propeller Shaft Replacement (Rear Propeller Shaft Replacement).




3. Remove the rear output shaft seal.




4. Inspect the rear output shaft bushing for scoring or wear.
5. Remove the rear output shaft bushing, if required, using the J 45380.

1. Install the finger section of the J 45380.
2. Install the tube and forcing screw to the finger section. Ensure the forcing screw is backed out.
3. Using a wrench on the forcing screw, remove the rear output shaft bushing.

Installation Procedure




1. Using the J 45380, perform the following:

1. Install the bushing or the finger section of the J 45380.
2. Install the finger section to the main body of the J 45380.
3. Position the bushing and tool to the case.
4. Install the bushing until the tool bottoms on the case.
5. Remove the J 45380.




2. Align the notch on the J 37668-A with the tab on the seal.
3. Using the J 37668-A, install the seal with the tab at the top and the weep hole at the bottom.




4. Install the rear propeller shaft. Refer to Rear Propeller Shaft Replacement (Rear Propeller Shaft Replacement).
5. Inspect the transfer case fluid level. Refer to Transfer Case Fluid Replacement (Transfer Case Fluid Replacement).
6. Lower the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle (Service and Repair).
