Brake Shoe: Service and Repair

Rear Drum Brake Shoe

REMOVAL

1) Remove the rear drum brake drum.
2) Remove the shoe hold-down spring.





3) Remove upper shoe return spring, lower shoe return spring and adjuster, then remove the leading shoe.
4) Remove the shoe hold-down spring and trailing shoe.





5) Disconnect the parking brake cable from the parking brake lever.





INSTALLATION

CAUTION:
Be sure the lining surface is free from brake fluid and grease.

1) Apply brake grease to the following locations.

Brake grease:
Molykote M7439 (Part No. K0770YA000)

^ Six contact surfaces of the brake shoe rim and back plate
^ Contact surface of the brake shoe and the wheel cylinder
^ Contact surface of the brake shoe and adjuster
^ Contact surface of the lever and brake shoe

2) Connect the parking brake cable to the parking brake lever.
3) Check that the parking brake cable does not fall from the cable guide.
4) Install the trailing shoe and hold it down with the shoe hold-down spring.
5) Install the adjuster and adjusting lever to the leading shoe.





NOTE:
Install the adjuster with the adjusting wheel facing toward the front side of vehicle.





6) Install the leading shoe and hold it down with the shoe hold-down spring.
7) Install the adjusting spring and return spring.
8) Install the rear brake drum.
INSPECTION

1) Measure the lining thickness. If it exceeds the service limit, replace the brake shoe with a new part.

Lining thickness
Standard value 4.5 mm (0.177 in)
Limit: 1.5 mm (0.059 in)

2) If the deformation or wear of back plate, brake shoe, etc. are severe, replace them.
