Steering Column Removal and Installation
Steering Column Removal and InstallationReference: Steering Wheel and Column Components
WARNING:
Handle removed driver air bag with care. Refer to Precautions for Handling and Storage of Air Bag System Components.
CAUTION:
^ Steering column absorbs a shock with its deformation. Be careful to handle removed steering column as follows.
- Impact in shaft direction may change column length.
- Impact may deform bracket.
^ Do not release telescopic and tilt lever with steering column nuts loosened or steering column removed from vehicle. Doing so may increase operating force for telescopic or tilt motion.
^ Loosen steering column nut after removing steering lower shaft for preventing damage of shaft joint bearing.
Removal
1) Remove steering wheel.
2) Remove contact coil cable assembly and steering angle sensor.
3) Remove instrument panel undercover and steering column hole cover.
4) Remove steering joint cover.
5) Put matchmark (1) on joint (2) of steering lower shaft and pinion shaft (3).
6) Remove lower joint bolt (4).
7) Remove steering lower shaft.
8) Remove steering column harness clamp (1) from bracket.
9) Remove steering column rear nut (2) and steering column front nut (3).
10) Remove steering column.
Installation
Reference: Steering Column Inspection
CAUTION:
Install steering lower shaft after tightening steering column nut to prevent damage to shaft joint bearing.
1) Confirm that front wheels are in straight-ahead position.
2) Install steering column.
3) Tighten steering column front nuts (1) on lower side and then steering column rear nuts (2) on upper side to specified torque.
NOTE:
^ Make sure that clearance between stud bolt (1) and lower bracket (3) should be 0 (zero) when installing.
^ Check the following points, after tightening steering column nuts.
- Telescopic function and tilt function move smoothly when lever is released.
- Telescopic function and tilt function are securely fixed when lever is locked.
Tightening torque
Steering column nut (a): 14 Nm (1.4 kg-m, 10.5 lbf-ft)
1) Install steering column harness clamps (4) to bracket.
2) Align matchmark (1) on joint (3) of steering lower shaft to pinion shaft (2).
3) Tighten lower joint bolt (4) to specified torque.
Tightening torque
Lower joint bolt (a): 25 Nm (2.5 kg-m, 18.5 lbf-ft)
4) Install steering joint cover.
5) Install contact coil cable assembly and steering angle sensor.
6) Install steering wheel.
7) Install steering column hole cover and instrument panel undercover.
