Axle Shaft, Bearing & Oil Seal

Backing Plate Removal (Part 1 Of 2). Pickup & 4Runner:





1. Raise and support vehicle.
2. Remove rear wheel and brake drum.
3. On 4Runner, remove rear brake assembly.
4. On Vans, remove brake return spring using spring tool 09703-30010, or equivalent.
5. On all models, Disconnect parking brake cable and using line wrench 09751-36011, or equivalent, remove brake line.
6. On Vans, remove backing plate mounting nuts. Then use axle puller 09520-00031, or equivalent to remove axle.
7. On Pickup and 4Runner, remove four backing plate mounting bolts and pull out axle.
8. Remove snap ring from axle shaft.
9. Install special tool 09521-25011, or equivalent and press axle from backing plate, Fig. 1.
10. Pry out outer seal using screwdriver.
11. Using bearing removers 09223-56010 and 09608-35014 or equivalents, press bearing from backing plate.
12. On Vans, use seal puller 09308-00010, or equivalent to remove axle seal.
13. Grind down bearing inner retainer, then cut it off using a hammer and chisel.
14. Using bearing remover 09527-21011, or equivalent and press, remove bearing and outer retainer from shaft.
15. On all models, reverse procedure to install.
