Brake Pad: Service and Repair

Pads, Replace

1. Raise and support front of vehicle, then remove wheel and tire assembly.
2. Remove two caliper mounting bolts, then remove caliper. Do not allow caliper to hang by brake hose.

3. Remove inner pad, then remove outer pad and anti-squeal shim, Fig. 3.



4. Remove anti-rattle spring and pad guide plate.
5. Remove pad support plate and anti-squeal shim.
6. Reverse procedure to install.

Caliper, Replace

1. Raise and support front of vehicle, then remove wheel and tire assembly.
2. Disconnect brake hydraulic line from frame bracket and from caliper using suitable wrench.
3. Remove caliper mounting bolts, then the caliper.
4. Reverse procedure to install and bleed brake system.

Disc, Replace

On Tercel models, proceed as follows:
1. Raise and support vehicle, then remove tire and wheel assembly.
2. Remove caliper assembly and torque plate.
3. Lift brake disc from hub assembly.
4. Reverse procedure to install. Torque wheel lug nuts to 65 ft. lbs.

On Starlet models, proceed as follows:
1. Remove caliper assembly as described under "Caliper, Replace".
2. Remove hub grease cap, then remove cotter pin, locknut and adjusting nut.
3. Slide disc and hub assembly off spindle.
4. Reverse procedure to install. Adjust wheel bearings and bleed brake system.

Caliper Overhaul

1. Remove caliper as described under "Caliper, Replace".

2. Remove anti-squeal shim and cylinder boot set ring, Fig. 3.



3. Remove cylinder boot, then remove piston using compressed air.
4. Remove piston seal, caliper sliding bolt, dust boot, collar and union.
5. Install union onto caliper and torque to 19-26 ft. lbs. (2.7-3.5 kg-m).
6. Apply rubber grease to piston seal, then install piston seal onto piston.
7. Apply rubber grease to piston, then install piston into caliper.
8. Install cylinder boot and set ring, then lubricate collar and dust boot and assemble onto caliper.
9. Install caliper sliding bolt and anti-squeal shim.
